This is the prize winning essay: THE MOST INTERESTING ' EXHIBIT - THE • CLASSROOM By Sandra Halley On my visit to the Huron' County Pioneer Museum in Go- derich, I saw many interesting' exhibits but I thought the most appealing of them all was the school room. This room gives one a clear picture of what the school rooms looked like around '1900 and what they look •like today. At one end of the room is a blackboard 'with several arith- metic questions. These are examples •of what we refer to to- day as, "The Fundamental Opera- tions". The sketch' of the teacher was typical of the early twentieth century. There are many types of desks ranging from the bench type to the modern type. This last type is ' the seat attached to the desk. There is a variety of books, including stories of King Henry VIII and Several text books of that period. In 1910 the teachers had a variety of straps to punish the disobedient children. One has a. wooden handle with split leather ends. The other two straps are made of canvas. Next to the straps is a picture of a little boy being strapped across the hands by his teacher. Behind the boy who is being punished is' another boy passing an apple to his friend. Several slates with pencils and some ink bottles are also shown. A number of school bells are • on display. Some are small desk bells and the others are tower bells. One large bell, to me, has an interesting method of being used,. On the side of it is a large 'wheel. The bell has a frame around it. A rope runs from the wheel to the bell. You turn the wheel and the bell starts ringing. Several maps are on the wall. One such map is that of North America. Another is of Huron 'County when the townships of Biddulph and McGillivray were included in Huron County. Several plaques with senten- ces and letters printed on them are displayed on the walls. The purpose of these plaques were to help the younger children read and print. Another interesting item dis- played is a 1910 pencil box. It is made entirely of wood and is gaily decorated with paint. You slide open a little door and there are Compartments for pens, pencils, erasers and other items used in Writing,' drawing and the con- structing of geometric figures. Many more interesting exhi- Jim McClure; Shortest lady - Bessie McClure; Tallest' man - Sam McClure; Lady with largest 'hips - Bessie McClure; Lady with most buttons - Helen Mc- Clure; Man with best looking legs - Bill McClure; Guessing maca- roni in jar - Dorothy Dalton.
