Thursday finished work on the largest 7-inch reinforced con- crete bridge deck ever poured in Ontario. The finished bridge at Ben Miller is 540 ft. long and 39 ft. wide with a 30-foot driveway and sidewalks on each side. The' deck; or floor, of the bridge is 7 1/2 inches thick. It is supported by five piers and two end abuttments also constructed of re- inforced concrete. Because of its location, it was neces- sary to pump ready-mix concrete from the river level to the bridge deck above. ,Em- ploying one of the two pumping facilities available in Canada capable of doing the job, a total of 550 yards of concrete was pumped before the task was completed. The cement was distributed along the deck through a five inch steel tube. To keep up with the job which continued fornearly two days, Huron Concrete Supply, Ltd. of Sea- forth • and Goderich, who supplied the ready-mix, used '9 ready-mix trucks. The entire project was planned and carried out by the Huron •County Road Department and in charge of Huron County Engineer, J. W. Britneil. The 'actual bridge design was the responsibility of McCormick Rankin and Associates of Port • Credit. The new bridge crosses the Maitland River in a gentle curve which starts about 50 feet east of the old 360 foot steel truss structure which it is replacing. The old britige which was built around the turn of the century, will be detnolished in the fall. Huron County Bridge Superintendant, Bob Edgar, told the Expositor that the bridge was part of a reconstruction pro- gram being carried out on Huron County Road No. 1. The road will be straightened , and paved from Highway No. 8 to Huron County Road No. 31: Mr. Edgar said the total cost of the project was in excess of $280,000, approximately $268,000 of which is for the new bridge..
