The Lucknow Sentinel reports that Tom
Morrison has been installed as Legion
president. Ted Elliott, deputy zone com-
mander, Brussels, was head of installing
team. ',Never happen in aani.11ion years!
But it did" is the heading on an interesting
item In the same paper. It seems a man
and his wife were returning from a social
outing. Pressing the accelerator a bit hard,
he was stopped by the police for speeding.
The police , asked if he had been drinking
and he sighed, “Had a couple of beers",
then they told him that his wife had better
drive. Of course, not wanting to argue, he
agreed, but failed to tell that his wife did
not have a driver's licence. Proceeding
again . . . . You guessed it! The car was
stopped by a second policeman who asked
the lady driver for her licence. You can
guess the rest. An attempt, and it was
understood successful, was made to ex-
plain to the officers that she wouldn't have
been driving without a licence except at
the insistence of the first policeman up
the road. Methinks there were a lot of po-
licemen on that one particular road. Mr.
and Mrs. Ralph Hunter of Ripley marked
their 50th wedding anniversary recently.
In scanning the Wingham Advance-
Times we note that members of the family
of Mrs. Alice Wilson, Wingham, gathered
at the home of Mr. and Mrs..Robert Chit-
tleburgh on Saturday afternoon to mark the
occasion of Mrs. Wilson's 90th birthday.
Mayor DeWitt Miller, Winghain; emerged
from Main Street store early one morning
recently and was hailed by the first person
he met about what a beautiful day it was. So,'
in the best of spirits, Mayor Miller
whistled and skipped his 'way up the street
to the town ifkl, certain that all was well
with the world. At this point, however, his
day was doomed and ruined, because an
irate woman jumped from a parkedcar and
demanded, ',Whet are you going to do about
all the dogs running around town?" - That
was it!. The whistle stopped, the sun quit
'shining. •
Mr. and Mrs. Mark 'Armstrong of Bel-
grave celebrated their 50th wedding anni-
versary recently.
From the Kincardine News we scan the
following: That Kincardine Council ap-
proves the hiring of a fourth constable for
the police force; that the deadline is near
at hand for entries in the Miss Kincardine
contest being held in conjunction with the
Old Boys' Reunion; that Kiritardine Play-
grounds celebratedtheir annual Hobo Day
Friday morning of last week. A parade of
all the tramps and little hobos was held at
approximately 9:30 down Malin street.
The St. Marys Journal-Argus reports
that the St. Marys Arena is a beehive of
activity these days, 'as the deadline ap-
proaches for the installation of the sum-
mer ice surface. The hockey school opens
July 20th which means that the new equip-
ment ,must begin freezing operations at
midnight, Friday, Jury 10th.
From the Mitchell Advocate we note
that relatives and friends gathered at the
home of Mr. and Mrs..Douglas Blair, Se-
bringville, to mark the golden wedding
anniversary of mr. andaVirs. Edwin Erb,
Downie Township. •Mr. Blair is the son-in-
law of Mr. and Mrs. Erb.
The Zurich Citizens News reports that
13-year old Kathy Logan, a grade eight
student graduating with 'high scholastic
achievement, out of 12 subje cts received
10 - A's. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Logan, Bayfield, she was presented
with $25 and a book by Reeve E. W. Odd-
leifson on behalf of the Memorial Fund
Committee. The award, a first, was estab-
lished in memory of Ruth Hayman Elliott
of Hayfield. The presentation was made at
the Huron Centennial School. The News
also reports that mach work has been done
in Bayfield Arena the past three weeks and
miles of pipe have been .fastened to the
floor and cold mix has been spread between
and over the pipes. All, that remains to be
done is the applicatiorebf a hot mix of as-
phalt over the whole works and then the
roller skating cazybegin once more.
In scanning 'the Goderich Signal-Star,
we note that the Dutch Canadians of Go-
derich and surrounding area presented the
• roan of Goderich with a/n ornamental foun-
tain recently as a "Wank you Canada" for
the part Canadians played in liberating the
Netherlands 25 years ago. Prior to the
preSentation, members of the Dutch com-
munity placed a wreath at the cenotaph in
Courthouse Park la memory of those who
lost their lives. Rev. G. L. Royarof Knox
Presbyterian Church, gave the dedication
,and the wreath was placed by George be-
Jong and Jon Bakker. We also notethat the
Goderich Signal-Star is this year hosting
the annual Ontario Weekly Newspaper As-
sociation Golf Tournament at the Maitland
Country Club Friday, July 17th, beginning
at 1 p.m. Publishers will attend from all
over Ontario and Michigan. The Bluewater
Radio Club held its first field day recently
at the farm of Mr. Dean Aldwinkle, Bruce-
field. The Club has been formed a short
time by former members of now defunct
Clinton Radio Club and includes members
from Goderich, Clinton and surrounding
areas. Over the weekend contact was made
with amateurs from coast to coast in
Canada and the United States as well as
overseas.
From the Exeter Times-Advocate, we
note that perhaps one of the oldest land-
marks of the area was torn down recently.
This building was one of the first business
establishments in the Police Village of
Crediton. It was built in 1870 and has
houSed ninny different businessesover the
yeasts.. For Most of the 1'900s it housed a
barber shop Operated by G. E. Wenzell
which was sold a couple Of years ago to
present owner Leo Boyle. A Bonsai]. native,
William Gerald ChaPman, recently gra-
duated from the Ontario Provincial Police
College, Tdrontii; has been posted to the
Sombra detachment in the Chatham Police
District.
