St. Columban edged Sarnia
Briarwood Rangers 3-2 in a Lon-
don & District Soccer League
gatne played inSeaforth on Satur-
day. Sarnia led 2-1 late in the 2nd
half, but St. Columban rallied for
two goals with the winning goal
coming in the last minute of play.
St. Columban opened the sco-
ring at about the .fifteen minute
mark of the 1st half, on a corner
kick. Gord Moylan dropped aper-
fect shot in front of the Sarnia
gaol, with the ball
of
into
the top left corner of the net. The
play was even throughout the 1st
half with both goal tenders co-
ming up with many fine saves,
making the score 1-0 at half-
time.
Early in the 2nd half, Sarnia
tied the score on a long shot that
goalie Paul O'Reilly lost sight of
due to the sun. The ball dropped
into the top left corner of the St.
Columban met, just below the top
cross-bar. Sarnia took a2-1 lead
about ten minutes later after pi-
cking up a loose ball and scored
from doge in.
St. Columban pressed to the
attack and had many fine Chances
to tie the score, once when Tom
Love fired a shot that just missed
the top corner of the Sarnia goal
and again when Murray McClure
passed to George Love who broke
in -on the right wing apd fired a
hard rising shot that hit the top
cross-bar of the Sarnia goal with
the goalie beaten on the play.
St. Columban finallY tied the
score with about ten minutes left
in the game when George Love
picked up a loose ball at the Sar-
nia 18 yard line and fired a shot
through a maze of players that
Bob Young deflected inr.from the.
Sarnia goal-line. With time run-
ning out in the game and every-
thing pointing to -a tie game, St.
Columban got a corner kick in
the Briarwood end. •
George Love fired a hard low
shot that came to Ken Flanagan
in front of the Sarnia goal and Ken
bulged the net with a hard shot,
with the goal coming in the final
minute of play. This made the fi-
nal score, St. Columban 3, Sarnia
2, giving St. Columban a record
of 5 wins and 1 loss in league play.
The next St. Columban game
will be July 18th in London against
London Yugoslair Canadians and
July 25th a home gathe is sche-
duled when London Scottish will
