London Croatia downed St.
Columban 3-1 in a London &
District Soccer game which was
the 1st round for the Sinosic Me-
morial Trophy. The game was
played at the Glendale Sports
Centre in London on a field that
was covered with water following
heavy rains on Saturday. Croatia
opened the scoring mid-way
through the 1st half when a long
shot hit a water puddle in front of
the St. Columban goal and instead
of bouricing to goalie Paul
O'Reilly, the ball slid along the
ground into the corner of the net.
St. Columban tied the score
at 1-1 about ten, minutes later
when Paul Malone passed the ball
to Gord Moylan who set up Gerald
Ryan on the left wing with Gerald
scoring on a hard low ,shot just
inside the right goal post of the
Croatia goal.
In the last minute of the 1st
half a Croatia player fired a shot
that was heading into the too left
corner of the St. Columban net, •
but Brian Melady made a fine di-
ving save, deflecting the ball over
the goal with his hand. This re-
sulted in a penalty shot. The
'Croatia player fired a hard shot
for the right corner but goalie
Paul O'Reilly made a sensational
save. The referee, however, ruled
that O'Reilly had moved before
the ball was shot and the penalty
was taken over. This time the ball
was fired into the left 'side of the
net to make it 2-1 for Croatie at
half-time.
St. Columban put up a deter-
mined drive in the 2nd half in an
effort' to tie the score but were
unable to beat the Croatia goalie
who made fine saves on Gerald
Ryan, Tom Love and Brian Me-
lady from close in.
In the latter stages of the game
with St. Columban players all
playing up field, the Croatia left-
winger got a break-away from
centre-field and raced in to score
from close in. This made the fi-
nal score Croatia 3, St. Columban
.1 and eliminated St. Columban
from play for the Sinosic Me-
morial Trophy with each game
being a sudden death affair.
The next St. Columban game
will be Saturday, July 11th, when
Sarnia Briarwood Rangers will
play here with kick-off at
6:00 p.m. at the Seaforth District
High School field. On July 18th,
St. Columban will be in London to
play Yugoslav Canadian and July
25th will be a home game with
