Ste Columban Wins Fourth Game, 5-2 St. Columoan continued their winning ways when they downed St. Marys 5 - 2 in a London and , 'District Soccer League game played at St. Marys on Saturday. St. Columban dominated play from the opening whistle when they won the toss and elec- ted to play with, the wind in the 1st. half. St. Columban Opened the scoring at the ten minute mark when George Love picked up. a loose ball at the 18 yard line and fired a low shot into the bottom left corner of the St. Marys neL Gerald Ryan made it 2-0 five minutes later when he broke in on the left side ,and blazed a hard shot into the top left cor- ner of the net. St. Columban continued to., press and raised the score to 3-0 on a perfect play. Tom Love carried the ball past two St. Marys players at centre- field and then fired a pass to brother George on the right wing. He waited 'til the St.Marys left fullback came to check him and then passed the ball into centre to Dave MOInally who picked Up the ball in full flight and fired a low shot into the St. Marys net as the goalie tried to check him. St. Columban 'made it 4-0 when Paul Malone headed the ball to Tom Love Who •broke in on the left, side and scored on a blistering shot that went right through the St. 'Marys goa- lie's out-stretched hands into the top of the net. Minutes later, George Love into the clear on a pass from brother Tom but the St. Marys goalie made the save only to drop the ball and Gerald. Ryan fired it into the net to make the score St. Columban -5 St. Marys -o at half - In the 2nd half, St. Marys pressed the attack with the strong wind in their favour . St. Marys were awarded a penalty shot but St. Columban goalie Paul O'Reil- ly came up with ,a sensational save. Minutes later another free kick was called 10 yards in front of the St. Columban goal. This resulted in a goal as the ball was 'shot past two on rushing St. Columban defenders, with goalie O'Reilly screened on the play. About 5 minutes later St. Marys were awarded another penalty- shot but the shot missed the goal. In the latter stages of the game, St. Columban tried to add to their lead but the St. Marys defence held out td make the final score 5-2. , St. Columban will have an open date or June 20th, with their next game 'in London on June 27th against Roma F.C. with kick-off at 6:00 p.m. The dra-w for the 1st. round of the Sincisic Memorial Trophy was made last week with St. Columban scheduled to meet Lon- don Croatia in London on July 4th at 6:00 plm. St. Columiaan' officials also received word last week that the game in which St. Columban downed London Yugoslays 4-3, must be replayed as there were six minutes left to play when the game was called. All goals in this game have been nulified leaving St. Columban with a re- cord of 4 straight wins for 8 points, scoring 15 goals and having 3 scored against. Elligsen LAST WEEK AT SDHS The last week of school always seems to be time to catch up on all the field. trips missed during the rest of the 'school year. On Monday, June 8, the classes of I2C , and 12D went on an excursion to Hamilton where they shopped . and visited the Stolen Steel Mills. Two days later, oh Wednesday afternoon, the Drama Club-went to 'London to watch ,"The Reivers", and to dine. And on Thursday evening spme sixty- odd lower school students attend- ed the Stratford Shakespearean Festival's production of • "The Merchant of Venice" (which was studied in Grade IX this year). • So, all in all, what with last minute tests; final exams, study- ing and whatnot, it was a busy end to a busy year. Charlie Wood, Legion Sports Officer, Is in charge of fielding the branch's team which will be augmented by several 'drafted' players. - Going,,.to the Legion team are Bill O'Shea and Jack Muir from the Firemen, Paul Morrisson, Bill Smith and Don Scrimgeour from the Mainstreet, and Dave Miller, Roger Bennewies and Rick Fortune from the Me- chanics. The Teachers team, headed by Howard James, picked up Don Tremeer from the Firemen, Dick Burgess, Bill Kerr, Bruce Fal- coner,, and Ken Whitmore from the Mechanics and Bill Pri9e from the Mainstreet team. la addition Howard is bring-„ ing in some 'ringers' from Cen- tral Huron Secondary School. The necessity for expansion became apparent on Monday eve- ning when the league was 'ori- ginally slated to get under way. Three of the four teams turned opt with teams with betvieen 15 and 20'players each. Since everyone is keen to play ball it .was felt that the league should 'be expanded and the teams carry fewer ball pla- yers, so that everyone on a team would be assured of playing. In the first inning Goderich took an early iead. Goderich scored three runs on one hit and four walks. This brought manager Moe (Mauch) Huard to the mound for a change of pitcher., In the Seaforth half of the first Seaforth closed the gap by scoring two runs. Go- derich scored one run In the second and Seaforth exploded for four runs on four hits. In the fourth Seaforth added three more runs. Goderich threatened again in the seventh by picking up two runs but reliever Kevin Bennett 4111 quickly closed the door to end the game with the score Seaforth 9 - Goderich 7, When asked about the game manager Moe said "I was not too worried when we were behind because I had confidence in our hitting which has been more than • adequate in the previous games.
