Nitrogen is everywhere. Good farm land may have as much as three tons of nitrogen per 'acre just in the plow depth. Although this seems like a lot of nitro- gen, consider that the air above that same acre hoids about 35,000 tons of nitrogen. Nitrogen can be classed as a paradox because, although it seems to be everywhere all the time, we have to keep adding it to the soil. Another paradox lies in the fact that nitrogen itself is an inert gas that is difficult to combine with any other element. In spite of this it is essential in, growth of ani- mals and plants. Still another paradox is the lack of a simple; accurate soil test for nitrogen, even thotgh it has been investi- gated more thoroughly than any other plant nutrient. Farmers use nitrogen eco- nornically in larger amounts than any other plant nutrient, Whe- ther applied as a solid (ammo- nium nitrate), a liquid (aqua am- monia), or as a gas (anhydrous ammonia), nitrogen is essential for yield and quality. Do not, however, use larger quantities in the hope of correspondingly better results. Too much nitro- gen can lower yield and quality. In fact, applied to excess can be a factor in livestock poisoning and in water pollution. Be wise; and be guided in the use of nitrogen by soil tests. This free service provided by the Ontario Department of Ag- riculture and Food can save you money and help you to plan re.* ther than gamble on an ubiqui- thus paradox.
