Such seed is designed to be planted in the fall, and expect- ed to survive the winter and ger- minate in the early spring when favorable weather condition's prevail. The special plastic coat is broken by the actipn of frost in the ground. Robert Jenkinson of the Crops Division, Ridgetown College of Agricultural Technology, reports that some of the plastic-coated seed started to germinate in early March. Since then, however, it has remained in the ground and rotted. When the Mets first stag- gered on the baseball scene in New York, Yankee Stadium was' the House That Ruth Built, the "home" of baseball, the shrine of America's nation- al game. The Broadway show, Damn Yankees, was a tribute to the annual fall happening - a Yankee victory in the World Series. Many a Canadian as well as Americans had the same dream as in that story - leading one of their teams to a World Series win over the hated Yankees. The Mets slowly changed that with some of the most ridicu- lous baseball in the history of the game. They couldn't field, their hitting was second-rate and the pitching strictly minor league. The Yankees still had Whitey Ford, Mickey Mantle' and Yogi Berra, yet the Mets out- drew the champions. The Yankee management turned aside all questions on why the Mets drew with the com- ment: "Wait until the newness wears off. Our fans will be back and it will be the Mets who will be crying the blues." That cry continued until midway through last year. Then everyone started to realize that the Mets not only had fan ap- peal, but the Mets were now the best baseball team in New York. A few months later they showed Atlanta and the Baltimore Orioles that they were the best team in the world. So this is the year the fans should return to the Yankees. After all,the former American League giants are playing like - the Mets of old. And the Mets are 'playing class baseball, with the best pitcher in the game, Tom Seaver, setting strikeout records. Years of arrogance by the Yankee management has not been forgotten by-the public. When you discuss baseball with a New York cabby, he takes ( for granted you want to hear about the Mets. It was'the Mets who enlisted the aid of the 50,000 New York cab drivers when the National League returned.' A cabby was given a fee for talking up the Mpt.g and delivering fares to the new Shea Stadium, located directly across the street from the site of New York's two world fairs. "De Mets are great," ex- claimed one cabby the day Seaver fanned 19 San Diego Padres to tie a major league mark. "We shud win again dis year." Success on the field certain- ly hasn't hurt at the gate. And according to half a dozen cab drivers'., I surveyed recently, the Mets are still the darlings of New York. And, as expected, the Yan- kees are starting to fight back. Bill White blasted the Mets and said the Yankees deserve the fan support more than their rivals. Manager Ralph Houk said the Yankees are fielding a young team this year and ,are playing the kind of ball the fans like. It is only a matter of time, he said, before "we retake the lead in attendance." And , so it goes. The front-of- fice dispute is, of course, not completely unexpected. George Weiss was the brains behind the Yanks, and after his early retirement he turned up run- ning the Mets. Yogi' Berra went there when thewyanks gave him a short shift as manager and Casey Stengel also hind his fling. No one is a greater Yankee hater than a former Yankee employee who is let go in or- der to bring in a fresh look. And for 20 yearS or so,Yan • - kee hating was an occupation in baseball. • The Mets are doing every- thing to ensure that the mal- ady doesn't spread across Flush- ing Meadow to their organization. Pitcher Seaver is writing a weekly column on baseball, and other stars are available' at the drop of a hat for public ap- pearances. And the Mets have contin- ued to make it 'fun to watch'.. game at Shea Stadium'. organist keeps the fans happy, the 'seats are comfortable and every seat has a good view of tile playing field. Despite the Yanks (or because of them), the /Vlets are in for a long run. Win At Euchre Winners• at a recent euchre sponsored by the C.P. and T. Normal spring wheat seed was planted ozi April 9, and has' already started to sprout. Thus, says Mr. Jenkinson, even if the plastic-coated seed does emerge it will not be in advance of the wheat planted in the spring. Dr. C. S. Baldwin, 'Head of the Soils Division at Ridgetown, re- ports that about half of the plas- tic -coated spring wheat seed that was planted in the Tilbury area last fall has emerged. Dr. Baldwin feels it is pos- sible that the soil in the Tilbury area is more like the.soil found in the Red River Valley area of Manitoba, where a fair degree of success has been achieved with plastic-coated spring wheat.
