Kelly Engineering -Extension Specialist Automation offers many ad- vantages to farm operations - in increased labor efficiency, con- venience, and safety.- However, it has not reached its maximum po- tential because adequate sensing devices have not been available. The pressure switch on a wa-, ter system or the thetmostat on a ventilation fan are sensing de- vices long in common use. A photoelectric sensor to turn yard lights on at dark and off at day- break is a more recent Innovation 4 in widespread use. We commonly think of sensing devices as part of a complete, pre-packaged, automated, sys- tem. We seldornsee how, with a , little ingenuity, the devices alone can be usefully applied to many. farm operations.' * For example, a farmer using a tractor to drive a grain dryer was troubled by chaff and dust plugging the radiator grill, cau- sing the radiator to overheat. As a solution, he installed a thermostat in the cooling system to shut down the engine when the • safe, temperature limit had been exceeded. Pressure switches to operate electrical systems are available in many forms. A simple• sys- ' tern would be the use of a small auger to supply a. working bin located above a feed grinder. A, * ° pressure switch located' in the bin wall could stop the auger , when thibilf,'was felT;Thus saving valuable time.anergany steps. A sligh=tl'y' more" complicated sys- Win would also start the auger when the working bin was empty. Time clocks are commonly 4' used to operate lights, heaters, and ventilation fans. A simple and inexpensiveelay timer has many potential applications. It could be ' used to turn off an auger or leg elevator after time has been al- lowed for the dump pit to empty:- , The delay timer would permit the • operator to continue with'his work rather than have to wait to turn the equipment off. . Most labor-saving systems using sensing devices must be - tailored to the requirements of „7, your particular installations and ' it is, therefore, slifficult to pro- • vide standard plans. Local elec- tricians Can help you design a system 'and select equipment. Wiring, of 'course, must be done in accordance with the Ontario Electrical Code: • WEEKEND WEAR Pack a 'weekend bqg with a, nifty supply of our casual attire -' for fun, play.
