I.Q. Must I have a Social In-
surance Nbmber?
A. Yes, if you are.required
to file an income tax return
you are required by law to
have a social insurance num-
ber. Also, it is important that
the information filed on your
social insurance number ap-
plication is correct since your
Canada Pension Plan records
will be based on this informa-
tion.
2.Q. My wife took a part-time
job last year for the first
time since our marriage. She
earned over $3,000. Do I have
to include her income with'
mine or does she have to file
a separate return for her in-
come?
A. Since your wife will have
a taxable ,income she must
file 'a separate return. Be-
cause her income was more
than $1,250 you will not be
able to claim married exemp-
tion on your return.
3.Q. I am .self-enuiloyed and I
pay into a' retirement savings
plan with an insurance com-
pany. I have no salaried in-
come whatsoever and under-
stand that I can claim for
income tax purposes a maxi-
mum of $2,500 for my retire-
ment savings plan. Is this cor-
rect?
A. If you are not covered by
an employees' pension-plan you
would be entitled to claim
amounts paid into a registered
retirement savings plan up to
the lesser of $2,500 or 20% of
your earned income for the year.
4.Q. I gave $50 to the United
,Appeal. Can I claim this as
tax deductible in addition to
the standard deduction of $100?
A. No. You are entitled to
claim either the standard de=
duction of $100 or your chari-
table donations and medical
expens-es, but not both in the
same year.
My brother and I are sing-
le, both working, and living
at home with our parents. Our
parents are dependent on us
fgt. support and we share equal-
ly in maintaining the home. We
would like to know if we can
each claim the equivalent
exemption of $1,000 when com-
pleting our income_tax• return.
A. Assuming that both your
parents' dtherwise qualify as
dependent's, either you or your
brother is entitled to claim
the $1,000 equivalent exemp-
tion for either of your parents.
The usual exemption may be
claimed for the other parent
as you may agree between you
but only one $1,000 equiva-
lent exemption can be allowed
for any one household.
6.Q, Are dividends and interest
credited by insurance com-
panies on non-matured life in-
surance policies taxable'?
A,- Dividends and interest cre-
....lits on non-matured life in-
suranne policies have not been
considered taxable for 1969
and prior years.
7.Q. I am self-employed and my,
earnings are less than my per-
sonal income tax exemption.
Can I' contribute to the Canada
Pension Plan?
A. As a self-employed person
if you earn over $800 in the
year you are required to file
a T1 General tax return and
make the required contribu-
tions to the Plan.
8.Q. Is a farmer rbquired to
make Canada Pension Plan de-
ductions from the wages paid
to farm help'?
A. Deductions for the Canada
Pension Plan must be made
from all .wages ,paid, for farm

age and has received cash
