This Week In Ripley

A Remembrance Day Service
was held at the Cenotaph in front of
Huron Township hall in Ripley at
eleven o'clock, Monday morning,
November 11. Although the
weather outside was damp, in fact
wet and chilly, there was a fairly
good attendance as • the Ripley
Huron area honoured its War
Dead. - The parade, consisting of
members of the „Legion. Legion
Auxiliary, Brownies, Guides,
Scouts and Cubs with Marshal
Russ Stanley in charge. formed up
at the Legion Hall and marched
down the main street to the
Cenotaph. Don Mason was down
from Kincardine with his public
address system. After the opening
prayer, the secretary of the Ripley -
Huron Legion, Sandy MacCharles,
read the names of those who died
in _ the service of Canada. Bill
McCreath was:. the M.C. of the
service. Wreaths were laid at the
Cenotaph as follows: Province of
Ontario by Mrs. May MacDonald,
Township of Huron by Reeve Russ
Stanley, Village of Ripley by Reeve
Clayton Nicholson, Reid's Corners
Women's Institute by Mrs. Norma
Humphrey, Purple Grove W.I. by
Mrs. Betty Needham. Ripley W.I.
by Mrs. Mary Cook, Cubs by
Bobby Cameron. Scouts by Doug
Peterbaugh. Brownies by. Shelly
Galloway, Guides by Linda Mac-
Donald. Ripley and District Lions
by Bill Kempton. 1.O.O.F. Lodge
by Ham MacKinnon. Legion Auxil-
iary by Mrs. Nadine (Bill) Dan-
forth. and the Ripley -Huron Legion
by Bill Danforth. The resident
ministers took part in the service,
Rev. Cecil Carnochan of St. And-
rews and Mr. Richard Sand of
Knox. After the parade disbanded
at the Legion Hall, the ladies of the
Legion Auxiliary served lunch and
short speeches were given by
Reeve Russ Stanley; Reeve Clayton
Nicholson; Don Mason; President,
of the Legion Auxiliary, Mrs.
Nadine Danforth; Legion Presid-
ent, Bill Danforth and the leader of
the Ripley Girl. Guides, Mrs.
Wilfred Gamble.
On Monday evening of last week
the executive and directors of the
Ripley Agricultural Society held
their regular monthly meeting.
Incidentally, the December meet-
ing has been moved ahead to
November 25 - next Monday
evening at which time slides of last
September's fair will be shown.
Those attending were Hugh Mason
in charge, Morley Scott, Jack
Farrell,Reg Moore, John Gamble,
Mr. and Mrs. Russ Brooks and Ab
Wylds. On Thursday evening, the
Achievement Night program, with
the awarding of trophies and prize
money, was held in the Ripley -
Huron Central School for members
of the Ripley 4-H Clubs in Grain,
Dairy and Beef calves. Still to
comeis the one for the Forestry
Club.
Home from Fanshawe College in
London for the week end were Patti
and Murray ' Huber visiting with
Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Huber,: Denise,
Donna and David.

and Tuesday were taken over by
fall rains, then on Thursday,
morning, when daylight appeared,
the ground was covered with snow.
OirFriday wintry conditions contin-
ued. To -day (Sunday) the snow has
gone again. With the coming of
winter it was the first of many
Saturdays of activity at therinks at
the north end of Ripley.

A report from the Royal Winter
Fair in Toronto gives Tom Schmidt
of Mildmay the turnips or rutabaga
trophy for first prize in this class.
Jim Richardson of Walkerton, who
has won, this trophy on three
different occasions, did not make
the trip to Toronto on account of
wintry weather conditions. Carl
Brown of Rolling Hills, Alberta
split the top awards in grain
sheaves with Norman Schmidt of
Walkerton - . each had a first and
second. Our entries were not top
contenders placing fifth and .sixth.
Yes, you can believe it .-- the
people in Ripley will be ready for
that energy crisis in one way when
it comes.. For the past several
nights, starting with Friday, there
has been a blackout of street lights.
On Friday night with all that . snow
and wintry weather, one could get
the feelin'g of Eskimo living in the
North. •
Ripley area folks are glad to hear
that George McLean in University
Hospital in London and Elwyn
Pollock ih — Kincardine Hospital are
showing signs of improvement,
according to reports. In turn, they
are sorry to hear that Mrs. Gordon
Stanley has had to return to St.
Joseph's in London from Kincard-
ine. following still another accid-
ental fall. Also Allan MacTavish,
who was briefly able to be home,
has returned to Wingham Hospital.
To all these and other area people
in hospital, wishes for their recovr;
ery are extended.

The November meeting of Unit
One mem. . W . was held-- recently at
the home of Mrs. Gordon Patter-
son. Mrs. Bert Irwin conducted the
business session With 12 members
present and they decided to send a
bale to -Africa. Mrs. Jini Needham
reported on her visit to Brucelea
Haven in Walkerton. Mrs. Elaine
Pollock gave a report on the pot
luck dinner and Mrs. 'Irwin closed
with prayer. Mrs. Irene Boyle was
in charge of the worship and
discussion section in which Mrs.
Elaine Pollock was the pianist.
Mrs. Kelvin Henderson read the
scriptures. Mrs. Boyle led the
discussion and Mrs. Katherine
Collins gave two readings. Mrs.
Janet Needham thanked those
taking part. Lunch was served by
Mrs. Gordon Patterson. Mrs. Kel-
vin Henderson and Mrs. Burton
Collins.

Last Saturday evening the ladies
of the Ripley Women's Institute
served a turkey dinner to the Ripley
Huron Legion and Auxiliary and
their guests. Ninety were present
at this annual event held in the
Ripley Legion hall. Following the
dinner Principal Floyd Stanley of
Ripley Huron Central School show-
ed his coloured slides on Australia.

The evening closed with card
games and dancing with Norman
Dunsmoor of Kincardine furnishing
the, music for the party.

BROWNIE
NEWS
On Tuesday, November 12th the
Brownies . started their meeting
with a game of "Statues".
Luanne MacLeod was Fairy
Queen and she set up the Toad-
stool. The Brownies hopped their
Brownie Gold and inspection was
for names in the berets. Everyone
then sang 0 Canada.
At Pow Wow Snowy Owl read the
Brownie Story to the Tweenies
while the Brownies did the actions.
During work period Tawny Owl
had the Tweenies practice tying a
Brownie tie and talked about the
care of their tie. Snowy Owl and
Cadet played games withthe rest
of the Pack. The games were Fee
Fye Fo Fum, Grandpa . Jingles and
Telephone.
The meeting closed with the
Squeeze and Taps.
