Paratyphoid Cases
Reported, Public
Given Advice
Local and Huron County health
officials are trying .to trace the
starting point of recently reported
cases of _paratyphoid fever in
Wingham. So far the cases
reported have all shown up at
Wingham .and District Hospital,
County Health Officer Dr. Frank
Mills said that paratyphoid fever is
not the dreaded killer which raged
throughout the continent in years
gone by, but is a much weaker
relative of the Salmonella family.
He said the disease's symptoms
are fever, stomach pains, chills and
nausea. in fact, the search for the
source of the disease is hampered
because the symptoms are almost
exactly the same as stomach flu or
a heavy cold.
The disease. which is ' rarely
fatal; is an intestinal infection.
Dr. Mills pointed out that there.
are numerous tests. that have yet to
be performed and that, added to
the fact that all people who have
come in contact with the infected
patients have to be traced and
tested. compounds the problem of
isolating the source.
Speaking for the Wingham Hos-
pital Executive Ditector Norman
Hayes said that. the patients who
have contracted the disease .were
isolated in the 713" ward of the
hospital.
After the fits cases were report-
•
ed the hospital staff was tested for
the virus as a routine procedure
and two nurses whose test results
were positive have been placed on
a leave of absent*. It is believed
that the nurses contracted the
disease from • the patients rather
than the patients from them.
The hospital also restricted visit-
ing to area of the hospital where
the paratyphoid patients were
isolated. M.r. Hayes stressedthat
it is a community problem and
wanted to make it clear that there is
no proof ,connecting the outbreak
directly to the hospital. 1t was
simply that the first cases have
been reported there.
While the task of tracking the bug
down is going on, Dr. Mills had
some suggestions for area resid-
ents. • Number one, , wash your
hands thoroughly before eating and
secondly if you think you' have the
symptoms contact your doctor
immediately for testing_
