TODAY'S HEALTH
• Emergency departments
—for emergencies only
by David Woods ,
The dictionary defines "emer-
gency" n as "an » unforeseen occur-
rence; a sudden and urgent occasion
for action."
Look in on any hospital emer-
gency department, especially in the
evenings and on weekends. and
you'll see a steady stream of pa-
tients whose problems may well
have been unforeseen, but could
hardly be considered urgent: minor
cuts and bruises, and assorted aches
and pains usually outnumber the
genuine emergencies — the heart
attacks. abscesses and fractures.
Not that aches, pains, cuts and
bruises don't call -for medical atten-
tion. They may well do -- and if'
you have any doubts. it's always
best to seek professional medical
, help. But not necessarily in the
emergency department of your local
.hospital. •
Well then, where do 'you go? 11.
you need help but don't have a crisis
on your hands. you go to your fam-
ily doctor. . •
But the problem for many of the
people who turn to. the emergency
department with non-tirgenf, proh-
lems is that they either don't have
a family doctor — or they hase• one
but can't find him.
What they're disCo‘ering is that,
illness and injury can occur out-
side of the doctors regular office
hours: that they don't simply quit
when he does.
For those who don't have a fam-
ily doctor. it makes good health
sense to find one before treatment
is really needed. If you've come
from 'another town where you had -
a family physician, ask him, to
transfer vour records to the -new
doctor. Find out what services the
new. doctor provides and then
make sure he knows everything he
needs to 'know about you.
• If you already have a family doc-
tor. you should be aware of when
hes available. Obviously, he's not
going to put in a 24-hour day;• like
everyone else. he needs time Off for
rest and relaxation. If he practices
in a partnership or a group practice,
chances are that » when hes , not
available. another •physician is. If
. he's a solo practitioner. he friAy
‘k ell have an arrangement with an-
other doctor to handle off -hours
problems. •
In any event. you, as the health
care 'customer: are fully entitled
to know what services your doctor
provides..lust ask.
Generally. physicians don't make
house calls these days.. That's why
it's even more important that they
provide some kind of service on a
round-the-clock basis.
If /your problem really is an
emeriency, then you should go to
the hospital emergency department
where it will be handled promptly
and proper's; if it isn't. you may
• be adding to the burdens » of that
hospital. and will •Iikely be in for a
long and frustrating wait.
• • This whole matter of medical
care 'out of office hours is one
in .0 hich the patient can really help
, to make health care more efficient.
He can do it by knowing how to
'deal with minor donieStic mishaps
himself — like 'cleanin'g• and dress-
ing a small cut; by giving the family
physician a chance to provide the
personal, comprehensive and con-
tinuing care hes supposed to pro-
% ide and by leaving the hospital
emergency department to do. what
ir'N &leant to .do — look after real
emergencies. „
