and published five volumes of clan
history and has spent many years
of his life in the research of the
clan. We now have two highly
successful registered clan societies
in British Columbia and Alberta
and soon we expect Saskatchewan
and other provinces to follow suit.
Dr. MacPhee's vigor and fantast-
ic ability in many fields has fanned
an interest in me which i humbly
state should have been there many
years ago.
I therefore am appealing to the
historians and old timers of Bruce
County for information on two
different subjects which may or
may not be related.
(1) In October, 1882 there was a
great fire in the Michigan forests
and these fires were fanned by
strong winds the velocity of which
all people living in the vicinity of
the Great Lakes know only too well.
These fires were reported to have
sent burning ash and dense smoke
over the Lucknow region at about
noon of an October day. The skies
darkened to such an extent and
with the falling embers many of the.
residents of that area figured the
world may have come to an end. 1
would like to know if this story was
myth or factual. •

My second question deals with
the death of my grandfather, Peter
MacPhee. Peter MacPhee settled
in Lucknow in 1867 with his wife
Sarah (nee MacDonald).. They had
six sons and one daughter, John b.
1868, Alexander b. 1870, Willliam
b. 1872, Angus b. 1874, Peter b.,?.
Duncan b.?, Mary b. 1881 (Mrs.
Mary Beaton- now living in Calgary
Alberta) and the only living mem-
ber of that generation. Grandfath-
er Peter has been reported to be a
master mariner who went back to
sea after settling in Lucknow only
this time instead of plieing the
Atlantic he became active. in Great
Lakes Shipping. We knooti he left
home in,. Lucknow in 'Septeriiber
1882 to pick up his ship in Superior
Wisconsin. His ship was reported
lost with all hands drownedbut the
.name of the ship is not known.
One report we have is that the
ship had unloaded a cargo of steel
rails for the C.P.R. and was
returning to port when the violent
storm created this . disaster.
Another . report we have is that
Grandfather Peter •was the captain
of the ship and co-ownerwith a
Wm. McLean. However this is not
known definitely or it known that.
the ship was a barge. or a larger
freighter. It is believed that the
ship went down in Lake Superior
