For example, peo- ple Who develop cankers in the mouth — viral ulcers rather like. cold sores - may think they ,may have cancer and could add to a minor problem by imagining it's a major one. Such people should seek medical help and not be afraid to discuss their fears with a physician. As one GP told me: "Looking for the root cause is like peeling an onion. You have to look under each layer of imagined problems until you find the real one." This is not to suggest that the old- fashioned kind of hypochondria doesn't still exist. There are plenty of people' around who will retire to bed at the slightest hint of a cough or sniffle, or who believe that every headache is a brain tumor.. A. E. HERBERT Clerk, Village of Lucknow M•L PAGE pima: Langside Native Is 102 Years Old Miss Colina Ross, a native of the Langside area in Kinloss Town- ship, recently observed her 102nd birthday at an .extended care hospital in Weyburn, Saskatche- wan, Ann Kyle, writing in the Wey- burn Review, had this to say .of Miss Ross. COLINA ROSS, WITNESS TO THE CHANGING TIMES When I met Colina Ross, it was the twinkle in her eyes and the lines of wisdom borne by hardships and years of experience that weathered her face, that first caught my attention. Here was a woman who had recently celebrated her 102nd birthday . . . one of Weyburn's oldest living residents. She lived through a century of changing times, when Canada was a fledgling nation struggling for its rights as such; a time of two great wars; a . time that included the Wright brothers' first flight, and man's first step on the moon; and many other marked events such as these, all took place during her lifetime. Miss Ross was born in Langside, Ontario, in 1872. She moved to a farm near Carievale in 1903 and lived there until 1943 when she moved into town. She came to Weyburn in 1%0 and is presently residing at the Souris Valley Extended Care Hospital. Looking back in time, she vividly recalls helping with the threshing out at the farm. One time she squashed her finger while working. lnthose 'days threshing was done with horses. Miss Ross enjoyed church serv- ices and, while she was able, never missed a Sunday. "At that time everyone had a great respect for Sunday, the Sabbath Day," she pointed out; a contrast with today's practices. When she was younger she used to teach Sunday School classes and. recalls that they didn't have a choir in their time, but everyone sang in church. She likes to sing and on occasion still • sings along with hymns on records. As a young girl her hobbies were knitting and crocheting, which she describes as being a "good pas- time". She also enjoyed tcooking and loved reading books. Reading is what she misses most today, because as the years flew by her eyes weakened and she is now no longer able to read. Still very' sharp-witted, Miss Ross, in her humble manner, wanted to know why anyone was interested in her life, as she says she lived a normal life like everyone else. "I'm just an ordinary critter, she declared. garden -hypo" from the complex treatable one can be areal headache for the family:doctor.
