Nephew of Two Area Residents
Carboy Monoxiite From Propane Frig
Kills Man And Two Grandso•ns
A tragic incident which claimed
the life of three resident of
Western Canada on Thanksgiving
week end is of local interest.
Three people are dead and two
others miraculously escaped when
carbon monoxide from a propane
fridge filled a cabin with deadly
fumes.
Dead is William George Stoth-
ers, 64, of Shawanigan Lake, B.C.,
formerly of Saskatoon and his two
grandsons Patrick Stothers, 14, of
Regina and Donald Thomson, 14 of
Saskatoon.
Welham Stothers is a nephew of
Mrs. John Emerson of Lucknow
and Isaac Nixon of Belfast who
received the tragic news of the
death of their family members.
William's son James and his wife
Betty; of Regina, escaped the fate
that befell his father, son and
nephew.
The family group were at a cabin
near La Ronge, Saskatchewan for
the Thanksgiving week end.
Fumes from the faulty propane
appliance hit them on Saturday
after supper and they all fell ill.
The three who died fell to the floor.
The woman who survived was on.a
bed and the fifth person, James
Stothers happened to fall on a
couch. He regained consciousness
on. Monday night, over 48 hours
later and had to go over 12 miles by
boat and car for assistance.
He then rented a plane to take
his wife Betty to hospital in
Saskatoon. At last word, she
remained in critical condition.
An inquest was immediately
ordered and the jury convened at
once to view the scene of the deaths
and the bodies. It will reconvene in
several weeks after the police
investigation is complete:
Autopsies performed on the
three dead people indicated that
death was due to carbon monoxide
poisoning.. Before this it was
suspected that food poisoning was
the cause of the deaths.

people were present
to discuss the cattle situation and
the low prices paid to producers.
A discussion took place on the
price of beef in the stores as
compared to the price paid to the
farmer for beef. The most
outstanding difference seems to be
in hamburg and ground beef.
Hamburg is made from lower grade
cuts of beef. The highest price for
finished beef to the farmer is 50c to
53c per lb., the lowest 1lc to 28c.
It was felt that a good consumer
education program should be con-
ducted to give publicity to the wide
spread difference between the
prices, at the farm level and the
retail outlet.
