The latest fake to deceive the farm-
ers etas just been practiced upon sever-
al of the residents of bile township ( f
Manves, near Port 'Hope, and a word
of warning at this particular time
may -be the means of saving many
disappointed hopes and ruined rockets.
The fraud follows clo,ely on the lines
of the seed -wheat swindle, only it is
lnbre audacious. A smoothe.tongued
chap goes to a farmer and says he in-
tends starting a singing school in the
district, and would like to use his
house for practices. He is willing to
pay rent for the use of the rooms, and
in addition will put in a first class piano
and in case the farmer can dispose
of it to his'neiuhbors, he will allow
?lint a commission of $100. The pros-
ps•ct of such a haul of filthy lucre
fairly curries away the farmer, and he
agrees to the scheme at once. Before
leaving, however, the agent pulls out
a blank -form, and says he wants writ-
ten authority for leaving the piano at
his houce, to give to his partner who
performs the work of delivering. The
form is signed by the unsuspecting
victim ; in due course the piano is
delivered, but no singing lessons are
given, In a;month's time the farmer.
is notified that his note for $400 will
be due cn a certain date at a certain
bank, tied then he finds out for the
fi. st tithe that the order be had sign-
ed was in reality an agreement to
accept the piano at the price $400,
which sunt he agrees to pay in one
month. The piano is 5 cheap affetir,
and werthzperh5ps $150, but it serves
the purpose of doing the victim up in
good shape for sorrel $250.

In his sermon at Kingston on Sun.,
day, the Rev. 11r. Carson stated that
every girl should learn to earn her
own living. Some young Women got

man, but merely a suit of clothes,
which suit they couldn't patch.
A movement is on foot at Montreal
to induce the Grand Trunk and Cana,
dian Pacific railways to co-operate
with the city in erecting stock yards
for the benefituf drovers. At present
the cattle are landed at Point St.
Charles, five miles from the abattoir
and three miles from the ehipping
point. The proposal is that yards be
established at Hochel;aga, where out-
going ships could stop and complete
their freight of live stock.

The Walkerton Telescope has this
to say of a law which has been a dead
letter hereabouts: The Police Magis-
trate had up before him last week
Mr Geo. Bradley, charged .uy his
tenant, Mr Conn Schorr, with neglect.
ing to provide him with good drinking
water. 'We believe that this is the
first case of the kind ever brought be-
fore a magistrate in W alkertou, and
Mr Bruce, the P. Mi, took a lenient
view of the affair, and imposed a
nominal fine of $2 and costs. It may
not be generally known that landlords
fire, by law, compelled to furnish their
tenants with pure,whofesorne drinking
water, but such is the fact, and we
trust that the above will be a 'daru-
ing to all such to at once provide the
necessary liquid according to law.
