SIXTEEN THE LUCKNOW SENTINEL, LUCKNOW, ONTARIO -LOOKING BACKWARDS THROUGH THE SENTINEL FILES WITH MARGARET THOMPSON ,•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••4 20 YEARS AGO JULY 1954 The congregation of Lucknow and Dungannon Presbyterian Chur- ches extended,a call to Rev. Wal- lace McClean of Picton. The new minister did not, locate here until - after the holiday season. - A bus load of public school • children from Lucknow and vicin- ity were being transported twice weekly to Teeswater for swim- ming instruction for July and Aug- ust. This was sponsored by the, local branch of the Red Cross Soc- iety. The only cost to the child- ren was their pool fee of 10¢ per child. , Mrs. John Cox of Kinloss Town- ship Was honoured on her 100th birthday. , Dr. T. B. Cleland, local veter- inary surgeon, purchased the farm property of Mrs. Torrence Ander- son, a mile east of town. The Cleland family planned on mov- ing to their new location the first of September. • Had it not, been for heavy rains on July Ist and July 31st, the month would have gone into the record books as practically rain- less. Total rainfall for the month was 2.42 inches. Of this total 1.43 inches fell on July 1st even- ing and early morning July 31st another downpour measured' .80 inches. 40 YEARS AGO JULY 1934 • A monster crowd gathered in Lucknow to celebrate July 12th, which attracted thirty lodges and over 10,000 people. A young black bear was shot at the farm of Rodger Corrigan, by Ernie Ackert of Holyrood.. Mr. Bruin weighed about 130 pounds and was judged to be a' yeat or two old. A bear in this locality was unusual, although reports of a bear being sighted were occasion- ally heard and overturned bee hives near Teeswater, , were attri- buted to such a marauder. A bear had also been sighted by Reg Perrin in his barnyard near . Kincardine and also near Goderich.
