'30 Years Ago
JULY 1944
A double -drowning accident
timed the lives of two brothers,
'Oland Raymond King, aged
and 15, while swimming in the-
eswater River on thefarm of
tph Green. The two boys in
•
company with George King, Wil-
fred Waddell and Wilfred Walters,
following a hot day in the hay-
field, had gone to the swimming
hole to cool off. The two
brothers, one of them a non swim-
mer , got into difficulty and the
other boy's efforts proved
unsuccessful in tryingto rescue
them.
Fire of uncertain origin complet-
completely destroyed Archie Nich-
olson's garage at Belfast.

50 YEARS. AGO
JULY 1924
D. R. Macintosh closed a long
business career in Lucknow by
disposing of his grocery stock to
W. W. Hill. For 39 years Mr.
Macintosh had been a dry -goods
merchant in the village and two
years previously, 1922, he had
sold his business and entered the
grocery business which he had just
sold out. Mr. Maclntosh also sold
his residence on the corner. of
Havelock and Campbell Streets •
to William Connell and was ;mov-
ing to Southampton.
The store, which had been oc-
cupied by D. R. Macintosh was
leased to Benjamin Pearlman,
who planned on opening shortly
with a full new stock of dry goods
and clothing.

Lions Assist
Blind Vacationers
Approximately 600 blindvaca-
tioners will spend their holiday
at the Lake Joseph Adjustment
Training and Holiday .Cent're near
MacTier, Ontario this summer:
The centre opened its doors June
15th and will not close thein again
until Labour Day. There is a staff
of 15 counsellors and an activities
supervisor who are responsible for
the program. While vacationing
at the Centre, blind people parti-
cipate in such activities as water-
skiing, sailing, canoeing, swim-
ming arid outdoor games which in-
clude shuffleboard and lawn bowl-
ing.
The project was established.
through the• diligent efforts of the
Lions Clubs of Ontario. Origin-
ally they donated $350,000 which
covered most of the expenses of
initial construction in 1961. Addi-
tional funds of $150,000 have
since been received from private
donors. The Lions Club has main
tained a continuous program of in- •
volvement and support. The Cen-
tre is co-ordinated/and managed
through the Recreation Department
of the Canadian National Institute
for the Blind.
