• Retired Teachers
Meet At Wiarton
• On Tuesday, June 18th about
fifty retired Bruce County teach-
ers held a noon luncheon at the
Embassy Tavern, Wiarton. Dur-
ing the meal the Wiarton Public
School orchestra entertained with
musical selections which were
much enjoyed.
During a short business session
following the meal, it was decid-
ed to meet in Kincardine in 1975.
To help simplify arrangements for
such a gathering it was agreed that
the retired teachers living in the
Kincardine area convene the next
meeting. It was also agreed to
alternate our meetings from north
to south due to the length of
Bruce County.
A gift and vote of thanks was
extended to A. J. V. Leeder, the
principal of Wiarton Public School
and his orchestra for
their help in making our meeting
so pleasant.

Bruce Farm Report
SINGLE -WALLED
HORIZONTAL SILOS
The basic principle in malting
silage is to exclude the air. This
is true regardless of the type
of storage structure. ,To do this,
the silage must be well -packed,
the exposed surface area reduced
to a minimum and sealed off
from the atmosphere immedi-
ately after filling. These steps in
silage making are particularly
important with the horizontal
silo, which, by its very nature,
has a large surface area, and
lacks depth of silage for self -
packing.
Several farmers in the area, in
the interests of saving money,
and to allow for more flexibility
in size of storage structure, have
built horizontal silos consisting of
a floor and only one vertical wall.
This type of silo bothers me, 'if
material placed in this type of
structure is to be properly pack-
ed, it must be stored in a wedge
shape. This results in a larger
surface area. than if a more nor-
mal silo with two parallel walls
were used. This surface area in
turn is harder to seal off. (The
most satisfactory method appears
•to be the use of black plastic
which must be properly weighted
down.)
Some farmers using ttis type
of silo have not bothe :ed to seal
off the surface. I am concerned
about the amount of spoilage
which occurs. Not only are there
6" or more of rotten material
(which probably represents 2 - 3
times that depth in original mat-
erial), but also there is usually
some discoloured material for
2 - 3 feet. below the surface. Pre-
• liminary work at the University
of Guelph indicates that off -col-
oured silage may have lost a fair
amount of its original feeding
value.
The point I am trying to make
is that the proper sealing of the
silage surface is very important
if storage losses are to be kept
to a minimum. With one -walled
silos, it is much harder to achieve
this goal. II one gives any value
to these losses at all, it should not
take too long to pay for the cost
of the second wall.
