Be A Hundred
Our normal life span should, be
100 years, instead of 72, says one
Russian scientist. But too many
things, like retirement and
inactivity, shorten the span. Not
to mention cigarettes and choles-
terol.
A Soviet. physician who is pres-
ident of the International Associa-
tion of Gerontologists (the study of
aging) reports that his country has
more than 21,000
inhabitants , 16 ,000 of them wom-
en - who have reached the age.of
100.
Part of the explanation may be
genetic but it is felt that another
explanation is uninterrupted phys-
ical activity. Farming regions
like the Ukraine have high per-
centages of older people. One
man who died recently at the age
of 165 continued working on the
land until his last days.
The process of aging cannot be
reversed, according to the special•
ists, but we can slow down pre-
mature aging. Inactivity may•
hasten aging, as does poverty,
lack of attention tai diet, poor
housing, feeling isc lated from
people, and inadegi rte medical
care And there is .n ' question
that cigarettes shorter, the lives
of 30,000 Canadians e ery year,'
