AN OPEN LETTER
In response to the open letter
that appeared in your issue of
June 12th, the Lucknow Agricul-
tural Society would like to clarify
some of the misunderstandings.
On January 25 , 1971 Mr. and
Mrs, Reg Jones approached the
Lucknow Agricultural Society
asking 'for a ;sponsorship of a
Craft Show to be held in Lucknow
on July 80 and 31st. They explain
,ed that this •would be complimen-
tary to the Carlow Christmas Fair
and stated that the Carlow Craft
Show felt a great ,need for a Craft
Show during the tourist season.
Mrs. WilmerHardy was of a great
assistance at this time. Mr. and,
Mrs: Reg Jones were appointed as
managers of the first Summer
Craft Festival sponsored by the
Lucknow Agricultural ,Society.
As far as the dispute is concern-
ed , itarises from the 'fact that
Mrs. McCharles does not wish • to
abide by her own motion.
On August 23,1971 Mrs. Marion
McCharles made a motion
that the six original Craft Festival
Committee and six directors from
the .Board ,:of Directors ofthe Luck-
now Agricultural Society complete
this year's business and then turn
the proceeds over to the Lucknow
Agricultural Society and be con
trolled by the Lucknow Agricultur-
al Society in the, future. This mo-
tion was seconded by Mrs./ Anne
McInnes.
At a meeting of the Lucknow
Agricultural Society on October '30
1973, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Mc -
Charles were appointed conveners
of the 1974 Summer Craft Festival
to be •sponsored by the Lucknow
Agricultural Society:
It was not until April 3,19'14
that the Society were aware of
any changes until they received a
letter from •their lawyer notifying
the Agricultural Society of the
divorce. It was always under-
stood by the arena board that the
arena was rented to the Lucknow
Agricultural Society for their
Craft Festival.
In January 1974 the Craft Festiv-
al secretary's and the treasurer's
books were removed illegally
from the 1974 officers and as of
this date they have not been re-
turned. This makes it very diffi-
cult for th Society to contact the
crafters that were booked for the -
1974 Festival in the Lucknow
arena,.
We hope that this letter has
cleared up some of the confusion,
however the majority of the
people are confused by the various
titles assigned to the craft show to
be held in Ripley , some of which
are the Lucknow. Craft Festival,
the Huron -Bruce Arts and Crafts
Council and Ripley's Believe It or
Not Festival.

Gaunt Accuses
Ont. Government
Of Buck Passing
Liberal 'agriculture Critic Mur-
ray Gaunt (M.P.P. , Huron -Bruce).
today accused the Provincial Min-
ister of Agriculture of playing pol-
itical games and blaming the
Feder -1 Government for the prob-
lems.,of Ontario's farmers.
"Our farmers need some assur-
ance that increased production
will not lead to short term sur-
pluses, which ruin prices and
force them into bankruptcy" , said
Mr. Gaunt. "The Minister of
Agriculture has a great tendency
to wash his hands of the farmers'
problems, putting the blame on
Ottawa. This kind, of political
buck passing game has been a
favourite with the ,has
Govern-
ment for far too long. The prob-
lems of our agriculture industry
can only be solved if the federal
and •provincial governments co-
operate with one another, regard-
less of political affiliations.
"Farmers will not .continue to ,
invest money in new machinery,
more land, and other expensive in-
puts necessary to increase vital
food production, if they have
protection against. today's unc
tain prices. Some form olio
stabilization scheme for thef
culture. industry is urgently, ne
ed. Programmes to`stabilize
ual priceshave not proved in
fulin the past. ' We need an
effective income stabilization
scheme on a nation-wide bas'
with farmers, provincial andf
eral governments participant
Such a scheme would prevent
provincial price wars, rebuild
confidence of our farmers, ei
age more young people.tojee
agriculture as a career', ands'
fain a viable rural community
"The federal' government is
willing to'pay a share of thee
of establishing such a scheme
the provincial governmentso
tribute also, but the Provincia
Minister of Agriculture conth
to remain' strangely silent on`
subject. This is not the time
'sitting 'on the fence. The Mo
should indicate without
delay whether he is activelys
porting such a scheme, 'Ifhe
thinks income stabilizationfd
agriculture industry is nota the
answerrto the problenisof
Ontario's farmers, what ahead
five solution does he have in.
mind?'
