Local 335 Disc•uss.Better Ways
Of Serving Their farmer Membership
Thirteen members of Local 335.
of the National Farmers Union
met at the home of John' and
Grace Austin of Ashfield on Mon-
day evening, June 17 for an in-
formal discussion on National
Farmers Union matters. Two Na-
tional Directors were also present,
James Sheldon of Highgate and Ed
Eller of Hanover.
There was some discussion on
why :members do not attend rneet-
ings••regularly. Some reasons
put forward were: Lack of faith in
Union, some reluctance of farm-
ers to be associated with a Union,
some reluctance to stand out
and be .different, lack of good
leadership in executive, but most
agreed it *as lack of knowledge
in the structure of the Union and
what it can dofor farmers.
Policy is made at the Local
level, sent in the way of resolu-
tions to the District, then to Reg-
ion and on to National Conven-
tion. All policies have to be
ratified by delegates at the Na -
tional'Conven•tion before they be-
come Union policy for the follow-
ing year. -
Differences between the N.F.U.
and the Ontario Federation" of
Agriculture Were discussed. In
the N.F.U. all farmers are rep-
resented, regardless of what they
produce, with the aim of Union
to work for the betterment of all
farmers. In the O.F.A. farmers
are split into groups, depending

on what they produce. Each group
has its own .executive and each
work for their own product, often
with conflicting ideas of another
group of farmers. Obviously it is
an ineffective organization.
Mr. Sheldon, and Mr. Eller
felt it was a worthwhile disucssion,
with Local members deciding that
National Directors should visit
Locals once or twice each year to
learn what the members are think-
ing and the problems in each Loc-
al.
