Bit the disease kills nobody. This is exactly as it was with the influenza of 1557, or the record says: feRioh and poor, people of every occupation and of all ages, were seized with this dis- ease in whole crowds simultaneously, aucl it passed easily from s single case to a whole household. Death rarely occurred except in children. They say that this influenza epi- demic was raging last year in Tartary,' and the year before in the central proviuces of Chinn. They say also that since the beginning of the present year it has ravaged Egypt,.Ureece and Turkey, being none other then the "Dandy Fe'vtlr, " • They pretend even to trace the outbreak in Russia to travellers from Peru. It is not probable that this i:ifliienia having been indentified with past influenzas, there should be a desire to find the peculiarities of former outbreaks .re peated iu this outbreak. From Tar, tary to Araby, from Araby to Eypt, from Egypt to Turkey; whence to all Europe.—that was the route marked out for the influenza i D olden times. The phenomena are excep- tional. They are usually observed in persons of hysterical type, and offering for the moment the greatest hope, are quashed quickly by the miserable fail- ures with which they are attended so soon es the mesmeric plan is applied to patients at large. The fact is that an- aesthesia differs according . to constitu- tion, not largely, but in sortie instances exceptionally, to a degree little under- stood by the public generally-. There'is a form of hysterical anmsthesia just as there is ef' hysterical hypermsthesia, and when the representatives of the first class come under the hands of the mes- merist they are much perfect specimens for his suasion that they give him the most triumphant returns. These cases call for a special study in regard to ate msthesia, since until they are elucidated there can be no soupd progress. We would give an earnest warning on, this matter of mesmeric hypnotism, assuring our readers that they must not e:rpeot more from it than exceptional results, and these due not to true anaesthesia, but to individual, peculiarity. --London Lancet.
