dhristening of Joseph Dale Mail-
ette , son of Jud and Janet Mail-
ette of Kitchener on Sunday at
Kitchener.
Sunday morning service at Luck:
now United Church was a historic
occasion in the life of the congreg-
ation. The symbolic "Burning of
The Mortgage" wiped out a debt
which was incurred when the new
Christian Education and Manse
was constructed in 1968 at a total
cost of approximately $70,000.
Clarence Greer , church treas-
urer, burned the final bank note
on Sunday. Also participating in
the ceremony were Rev. Robert
Nicholls, minister at the church
and Mel Morrison, recording stew-
ard who read the following record
of events leading up to the burning
of the mortgage.
"For several years our aingiega-
don was faced with two needs
which made us consider the
building of a Christian Education
wing and a new manse. The Sun-
day. School needed more space and
better facilities in which to do
their work. The manse was get-
ting old and run down and needed
considerable work to make it
attractive for the minister and
his family.
On July 8, 1964, the first mon-
ey for new building came avail-
able through the sale of the house
and contents from the estate of
Miss Jean Lees. This amounted to
89 , 843 , 00 .
With this beginning and the
concern for new facilities, the
Official Board , on October 18,
1965 , directed a committee to
interview Mel Wedow , a building
contractor. .After their report and
several meetings,, on April 13,
1966 , the Board decided to build a
new wing. People were appointed
to committees and given respon-
sibilities, and the bank was ap-
proached about borrowing money
for 5 years at 7% interest.
By Nov. 15, 1967, 811,000.00
had been pledged for new build-
ing. However, before we would

Bob's mother is the former
'Frances Thompson of Lucknow.
As a child and youth he spent con:
siderable time in this community
and at the family cottage at the
"foot of the 12th" in Ashfield
Township.
He has resided in Vancouver for
many years and is married with
two young datighters. •
His promotion with the Vancouv-
er office of Canada Life is to the
position of Group Executive Con-
sultant. Bob has specialied in the
group insurance division of the
company.
Ed Blackwell of Lucknow is a
patient in Wingham and District
Hospital with a heart condition.
Mr. and Mrs. Donald Andrew
and daughter Jennifer Mary of
Olds, Alberta returned home on
Monday after a ten day visit in
Lucknow with their parents Dr.
and Mrs. Brock Cleland and Mr.
and Mrs. Alex Andrew:
