The Bruce County •Historical Society is holding an essay cont- est. It is open to all pupils'in grades 6, 7 and 8.- The topic is "Old Buildings". The first prize if $25.00, second prize 'is $15.00, third prize is $10.00. Mrs. Taylor's class is holding the assembly for this. week. The Lucknow Central Public School is to be the host ,of the track and field meet on June 12. Ripley , Kincardine and Teeswat- er are included. The band is going to serve refreshments. The final exams start in the • first week of June. . Mrs. McMurray, who teaches 6A 'was sick on the 15th. and 16th of .May. Miss Helen Thompson took her place. Mrs. Taylor was sick on the 9th of May. The Kincardine area of the O.P.P. sponsored an essay contest. The 'following entry written, by Chuck Huntington., Grade 8 won first place. Wk NEED OUR COPS Walking down the street at night you see two men roughing up an old man. You hurry by; you don't want to get involved. Looking put the window you, see a man entering your neighbours house with a flashlight.- Closing your curtains you go back and don't get•involved. Then comes the night when you're that Man.being beaten up or having your house burglarized , or suffering any number of other violent crimes or robberies. You wondered why no one tried to help you.' It's the same reason as you had: "I don't want to get involved" . We can thank God, someone wants to get involved. ,Our police fuzz, cops, what ever you choose to call them do. They are there, for your 'own good. If one gives you a ticket for speeding don't argue with him; policemen are usually fair. Still they are only htman. "PLEASE" try not to make their job rough. Just think what might have hap- pened if he had let you go on speeding at ninety miles an hour' in a sixty-mile art hour zone. Can you imagine the mess your car would be if it had hit another car or had gone'out of control, not to mention what you'd look like "pushini up daisies". Remember ! Cops do want to get involved and help you. It's their 'job Bill was there on' May 4 when Cannonade won the Derby.. How- ever, in a muddy "off" track Cannonade with the same, jockey, Angel Cordero, was third. It was quite an education on the telecast to see the saddling operations of the horses and also the varied act- • ivities of the people on the infield at Pimlico. On Saturday the horse Little Current was the winner with Miguel Rivera of Puer- to Rico the jockey, a friend of Angel Cordero. Another jockey riding was the well known Sandy Hawley who was a challenger 'on Front Page Challenge last Satur- day evening -, a taped weekly show. ' ▪ * * • A ng the 20,000 Ontario youngste rticipating in the Star's annual Junior Bowling tourna ment held in,Toronto, Robbie MacKenzie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lorne MacKenzie of Unionville and formerly of Stratford was second in the 10-year-old class with a ,score of 596. Robbie is the grandson of Mrs. Violet (Roy) MacKenzie of Ripley. Lorne is a member of the teaching staff at the Toronto Teachers' College. During the past week Harold Elliott of the 8th concession west of Holyro,od suffered a painful leg fracture and is wearing a leg c tst. The injury was sustained while he was working with cattle at the 'farm of Bert Thompson in the Purple Grove area. Harold's many friends Wish him a speedy recovery. * * * • • Recently able to return home from St. Joe's Hospital in London was Mrs. Oraen Rock of Ripley. Doris spent two weeks there under- going surgery and her Ripley •• friends wish hear recovery and are glad that she is ,back hoMe with. On Saturday evening' the recep- tion dance for Mr. and Mrs. Rus- sell Bolton (Marion MacLeod) who were married that same evening was well attended in the Kincar- dine pavilion.
