several other municipalities in
the area. •
Town Foreman Cliff Crawford
met with council 'to discUss
salary. His hourly rate was in-
creased from $3.50 to $4.00 to be
in effect until the end of the
year.
Maitland Valley Coniervation
Authority advised Lucknow Coun-
cil of the upcoming SWEEP ,
program and asked for suggestions
from council how this program
might be utilized in the Lucknow
area. Council will recommend
that consideration be given to the
cleaning up of brush on the bound-i
aries of the Nine Mile and Luck-
now Rivers within the municipal.-

Died Suddenly
Mrs. Werner. Pommer died sud-
denly at her home in Kitchener
on Friday , April 12 at age 82. She
was the former Lillian Gates,,
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Jacob Gates of Ripley,
Mrs. Pommer is survived by one
sister Dorothy Carberry of
Toronto and three sons and three
daughters. She was predeceased
by one daughter and ..a sister, Mrs. Ja r; es Johnstone of Lucknow. She
is an aunt of Mrs:Lloyd Ashton
and Clare 'Johnstone of Lucknow.

Attends Funeral
Mrs. William Hogan of Luck-
' now was at Richmond , Michigan
recently, where she'attended the
funeral of her brother-in-law
Joseph Ryan. Mrs. Ryan, the
former Martha Kelly is a sister. of
Mrs. Hogan.
Besides his wife, Mr. Ryan is
survived by two sons, James of
Detroit and yrantis of Richmond,
and one daughter Mrs. William
.(Margaret Mary) Gannon of Det-
roit.

Ontario research workers have
been announced by the. National
Cancer Institute of Canada.
This total is part of the $6,012 •
583 to be distributed to support'
research into the cause and
possible cure of cancer. Most of
the funds will come from the April
campaign of the Canadian Cancer
Society which is affiliated with
the Institute.

The largest single grant
($452,157) went to the Cancer
Research Unit at the University of
Western Ontario,. directed 14r
Dr. J. A. McCarter.
Substantial grants also went to
the directors of the two divisions
of the Ontario Cancer Institute.

Gashes Finger
Clare Johnstone of Lucknow
suffered a badly gashed left index
finger in an industrial accident
on Wednesday of last week.
Clare, an employee of the Salt
Mine in Goderich, crushed the
finger which required 30 stitches
to close. The bone was not brok-
. en. He was working at an eleva-
tion of about 50 feet reinforcing
the mine celing at the time.
