. REPORT FROM

BY HURRAY GAUNT
M.P.P. HURON - BRUCE
• The big news this week at the
.Legislature was the presentation
of the budget by Treasurer John
White.
Mr. White imposed stiff new
taxes on land and property specu-
lators. The amount of the tax
will amount to a 50% tax on any
land or house saleS profits deemed
by the Province as in excess of
real value.
Mr. White said speculation in
real estate bids up prlees.artific-
ially , increases the cost of hous-
ing and generates unwarranted
windfall gains.
Ontario pensioners , blind and
disabled ; will be paid the highest
guaranteed annual income in
Canada, $2';600 for singles and
$5 ,200 for couples from July lstl.
The Treasurer said the Province
also\Will pay drug costs for about
641,000 people receiving federal
guaranteed income supplements ,
family benefits and welfare pay-
ments beginning,September 1st at
a cost of. $20 million a year.
The new income
supplements provide for a maxi-
mum payment by Ontario of
$25.61 a Month for single pension-
ers and $68.84 for couples.
With existing federal o/d age
marketing system and it all adds
to the cost of getting the food
from the farmer to the supermark-
et shelf. And supermarket and
selfserve stores actually save you
money by handling food in such
large volume.
Let's look at another reason,
why your fobd bill keeps rising,
for one thing the more income
you have, the more you spend on
food. This doesn't mean you
necessarily Puy more food. Usu-
ally you buy more of the expen-
sive kinds of food , tender steak,
vegetables and fruit out of seas-
on, and convenience foods.
After reading this you probably
won't feel any better about food
prices, especially today. But we
wanted you to know that farm
families are just as concerned as
you are. Remember, you and,the
farmers wife are in thesame boat;
it keeps on costing/more.

' Where does the food dollar go?
Why do food bills keep climbing?
It's because a lot of things happen
to the food between the farmer
and you-proceitsing , grading ,
packaging, transporting, deliver-
ing , wholesaling , advertising
market reporting, retailing.
Let's look at our example. again.
It 'takes about one pound-;of
wheat to make one pound of
bread. Although wheat flour is
the main constituent of bread ,
the cost of the wheat has little
do with establishing the cost' of
the bread. It's the handling,
transportation, milling, baking,.
etc. that make up the' main part
of the cost. It's all part .of the
