' It is .very possible the govern- ment is thinking of trying to keep down food costs by controlling price 'at farm level, not the consumer level. There is no guarantee that hold- ing down prices at the farm gate will benefit consumers. Hard pressed Canadian housewives know all too well that cuts in prices at the farm gate don't nec- essarily lead to price reductions in the supermarkets. A recent example is the fall in meat prices to producers,which only resulted in a windfall profit to the middleman.
