/ WEDNESDAY, THE LUCKNOW SENTINEL, LuckNoW, ONTARIO
By Marion McCharles •
Once again the opportunity pres-
ented itself to Cruise the Carib-
bean - the enchanted sea.
Twelve area folk travelled by air
from Toronto on Sunday, March
12th along with 75 others from the
Brampton area to Miami, Florida
and by bus to Fort Lauderdale
where the group spent two nights
at Schrafft's. Hotel on the beach.
Funpand laughter echoed through-.
out the hotel and those who ate
-at a nearby restaurant Were greet-
ed by a 'streaker". . .
8wimming and shopping, sight -
seeing and lazing in the sun filled
the days thete and at 4.30 all
were •on board the Statendam and
a .bon voyage party. From then
on it was gaiety and wondering
what will happen next.
For two days the smooth sail-
ing and sunshine was the
idea of a dream come true.
On Friday the Island of
Curacao was reached. The port
of Willenstad has about 55,000
people who are Dutch and are
employed in the thriving oil refin-
eries. Here we saw -the famous
pontoon bridge called Queen
Emma. It is an interesting col-
ourful. Island of Dutch-style build-
ings. A shopping spree took
place here with lower than usual
prices. If ever you heard of "Peg-.
'Leg-Pete" , then this is the Island
where he buried the one leg' and
became known by this name rath-
,er than the famous

ToMorrow. "La Tierra del man
ana" signs are everywhere. Boliv
ars Tomb, The. Officers Club -
imagine foreign.ers finding them-
selves in such a place,where
an interpreter is needd. There
is progress everywhere. Tired but
weary folk waited patiently for a
bus to return to the ship. All
looked the same to us and no one
remembered what printing should
be on it. Sitting on door steps
caused many of the passers to stop
and ask what we wanted 'and
where we wanted to go. They
soon found us a bus, and we real-
ized 'that we need to ..xert more
effort to welcome foreigners to
our country.
From Catacas, we sailed on to
St. Vincent 7 a tiny tropical Is-
land of 150,000 people who vied
for attention. Even the Donkeys
were startled by the white folk,,
and one of the group Will long'
remember the Hee Haw he re-
ceived.
Then on to Martinique, 450,000
population, narrow `streets, steep
hills, beautiful beaches. These
two Islands are, yet 'to be taken
over by tourism. They are natur-
al beautiful tropical Islands, with
quaint ways.
St. Thomas; the last port of
call, is American owned and a
shopper's paradise. Seven ships
were docked in the harbour the
same day. Imagine the' crowds on
streets wide enough for a car,
where speed isn't controlled ,
where you attend school as you
wish, where you work only as you
want io. The hills and roads on
this Island have to be seen to .
realize, the impact of going
straight up a hill and straight
down on the other side, PO grad-
ual climb or descent. Fleaches
here were fantastic, and even
though you enjoyed the pools on.
board ship every day, you
had to swim at at least one beach.
One had to try the' various, rums
and wines 'of each and 'every Is-
land and some realized too late
the smoothness meant they were
potent. Here One had the oppor-,
tunity to have a look inside the
othet ships.
Two more days of sailing, over
silk smooth waters. The trade
winds blow , the air is balmy and
relaxation is the word 'and action.
Each, and every day and night was
filled to capacity with things to
do and see. One great long meal
from March 10 to March 22nd put
fat on many bones. Dancing,
swimming, exercise, wore some
of it away as did golfing, shuffle
board , table tennis, games and
fun. One of the group was hyp-
notized .
Shops aboard ship gave ample
time to shop. Always an orches-
tra playing, always a sing song
going on and always some one
creating some fun here or there.
The whole gang of 650' people en-
joyed themselves but not any
more than did the.loCal travellers,
Mr. and Mrs. Don McTavish, Mr.
and Mrs. Francis Gemmell, .Mrs.
Duncan D. MacLeod , Mrs.' Lillian
Hogben, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Mc-
Charles, Mr. and Mrs. Ford Cun-
ningham, Mrs. Gladys Murdie,
Mrs. Bertha Russell (Liz Taylor)
who all have mementos of the trip
in prizes they won, and memories,
the best prize of all.
90 Ladies Gather
For W.I. Social
Dungannon. Women's Institute
held the second event to celebrate
their 60th' anniversary at Brook-
side school on March 20. Over
90 ladies gatherel for an afternoon
of visiting, desselt and euchre.
During the lunch time Mrs: Elsie
Irvin won the prize for the lucky
plate and Mrs. Carol Nivins the
one for the lucky cup.
The high prize on the pink
cards went to Mrs. Anne Dexter
and the low to Mrs. Maiiene
Maize. On the white cards Mrs.
Iteta McPhee was high and Mrs.
Florence Bowden had low score.
The president , Mrs. Harvey
Alton, received the guests assisted
.by the P.R.O. , Mrs. Clarence
McClenaghan. The Committee
in charge was Mrs. Lorne Ivers,
Mrs./Wm. Stewart and Mrs.
Wilbur Brown assisted by the
branch directors.
Everyone enjoyed a happy time
and some good visits with old
friends.
governor of New Amsterdam in
Holland.
The next day found-us in La
Guaria , South America. Of
course everyone wanted to see
Caracas, the famous city in Vene-
zuela. Some took tours, some
hired taxis, others, brave souls
hied the tiansit system, for 50
cents and learned 'a lot in a new
way. Question any of the Ripley
folk, how they managed as for-
eigners. It was fun and all land-
ed safely back to the Statendarn
in time for sailing.
We wish 'to express our appreciation
people of • the area for the pleasant business
ations we enjoyed over the past 22 years in
now.
