pn Wednesday night of last
week, about midnight , four or -
five dogs attacked a herd of -
thirty-three cattle on the farm of
Jack Irwin, on the 10th of Ash-
field just west of Belfast.
The Irwins were "alerted to the
fact by a, neighbour, Alvin Hack-
ett and the attack was witnessed
under the burning yard lights.
When the attack ended,. one of
the herd was dead, fifteen had
stampeded smashing a-, fence in
four places and the remaining •
Seventeen stayed in the barnyard.
The cattle were eventually
rounded up over a wide area of the
township. Many are showing the
effects of the incident and, fright
which has, affected their weight.
Not satisfied with,thc one at-
tack that night., the dogs were
back again about 4.30 a.m. the •
same morning. The Irv/ins heard
the cattle and dogs and Jack man-
aged ,to get a shot at one of the'
dogs and believes that he wounded '
it, judging from its noise after the •
shot was fired. No trace 'of the
wounded dog has been found.
The dogs, described as quite
large, made a visit to the Irwin
farm about five weeks previously
when they were sighted. At that
time they did no, damage.
Dogs had earlier attacked sheep
on the' farm. of Jack Ritchie of ,

made possible through a bequest
from the estate of Mrs. Wilfred
