The .change in the weather was
the biggest •news this past week
so far. The first „part of the week
there was the January thaw and
. the Mild Weather, continued till
• the middle:of Thursday morning.

On. Friday Bert Breckenridge and
Mary McMurChy were able to
return frorn London hospital by
ambulance to Kincardine. Both
Were there receiving treatment
and surgery for broken hips.
Ripley folks are glad that they
have recovered to the place where
they were able to come back to
Kincardine' and District Hospital.
Mabel (Mrs. Bert Breckenridge)
continues as a patient in St.
Joe's Hospital in London.
On the Saturday noon report of
weekly Wes on the Ontario Live-
stock market in Toronto, Ripley
co-op 'shipper was mentioned for
shipping .a cow for Allan Farrell
of concession 10 in Huron township
which brought a top price for, that
class. last week.

80th Birthday
Mr's. Irene MaeKenzie of Moose
Jaw , Saskatchewan was honoured
on her 80th birthday to a lovely
family dinner attended by 80
and an evening dance when over
150 guests arrived. '
Her eldest on Donald MacKen-
zie was master of ceremonies. Her
grandson Bob Bruce of Hamilton
presented .a beautifully decorated
birthday cake and Dr. D'Arcy
Bruce of Goderich proposed the
toast, to the honoured guest. The
register was in charge of two
granddaughters Jeri Lynn Grimes
of Sarnia and Lois MacKenzie of .
Moose Jaw.
Those froin 'a distance who' were
present at , this special event were
Mrs. MacKenzie's daughter Jean
and her husband Dr. D. Bruce of
Goderich and their children, Rob-
ert Bruce of Hamilton, Miss Bar-
bara Bruce of Toronto and Mr.
and Mrs. David Ledingham (Sheri
Bruce) of Winnipeg and their
daughters; Mrs. MacKenzie's
daughter Mrs. Bill Grimes (Mary
MacKenzie), Mr. Grimes and
their children Jeri Lynn and Joey
of Sarnia. Mrs. MacKenzie also
had her sons Donald and Jerald an
daughter Margaret , of Moose Jaw.

Mrs; MacKenzie was the former
Irene Boyle , daughter of the late
Mr. and Mrs. William Boyle of
concession 10 KinlosS Township,
(now David Robb's farm). After
the death of her mother , Irene,
'her father and the other members
of the family left here and home-
steaded at Srelcam , Saskatchewan,
but Irene grew up at the home of
her aunt (aunt Mary) Mr. arid Mrs.
John . W. COX, concession 10, Kin-
loss. Irene has returned' many
times by car', 'by air , by bus ,and
by train to,visit relatives here and
always says "Its great ,to get back
Funeral service was held on last
Friday at the Sunnysicle Home in.
Kitchener for A. H'. Wilford, well
known in the Wingharn - Blyth
area. Mr. Wilford, who was 86
years, passed away in Kitchener
last week. Iilterment was on Sat-.
urday in Wingham Cemetery. 'He
had made appearances on CKN).

sale of. Ontario turnips and was
affectionately 'mown as "the '—
Rutabaga King" .-He -retired from
the field of advertising promotion
in 1952. '

Jon Vickers, received a•standing
ovation for his singing at the
Metropolitan Opera Theatre in
New *York. As he finished his
great-tenor lead role in Wagner's
Tristan and Isolde, the 4000
people in the audience rose to
their feet and Mr. Vickers was
given repeated curtain calls.. On
Thursday the writers, in the New-
York daily newspapers gav er him'
glowing praise for his splendid
singing. His wife is the former
Hetty Outerbridge , daughter 'of
thelate Re'v. and Mrs.' Leonard
Outerbridge, who, in turn, was
the former Tena.lvlartyn.
GUIDE NEWS
The regular meeting of the
Lucknow Girl Guides was held
January 31. A' game was led by, the
Swallow Patrol. For a change the
meeting was started off with
ampfire , led by Lorna Boyle.
Roll Call was taken With second-
ers acting as patrol leaders, foll-
owed by horseshoe formation.
Flag raising was done by the
Bluebirds. 0 Canada was sung.
Each Patrol went to their
patrol corners to' work onprojects,
Arrangements for going to Doe
Lake Camp were made with
Captain. Lieutenant worked with
the tenderfoot girls, teaching
whistle and hand signals. Suzanne
larldand passed her Promise and
Iviotto.
The meeting was closed' with
vespers and taps.

The, Grade .8 pupils from Brook-
side who will attend F. E. Madill
School next year were addressed ,
by Jack Kopas on Monday , Febru-
ary 4. 'Mr. Kopas is Guidance . .
Head for F. E. Madill. He gave
assistance to the pupils in choosing
theii courses for next year.
The folloWing evening the par-
ents attended a meeting' at Brook-
side with guidance Officials from.
Wingham.

The Grade 7 pupils in Room /
are having a card .party. The'
proceeds will be used for a bus
trip.
SCHOOL VISITORS
Several visitorslave been in the
school the past few days to talk
about special subjects.'
On. Tuesday, January 29, Mrs.
Ken Taylor from Lucknowspoke
to Room 9 on the subject of.
Tropical Fish. She showed slides
taken at an Aquarium at Niagara
Falls, N.Y. Mrs. Taylor also
gave information on care, of fish:
in our aquariums. •
On Friday., .February 1, Vince
Elliott took Room 2 on a hike to
the bush. They studied animal
tracks and different twigs..
Mrs. Nancy Morrison, Mrs.
Scott's sister , also visited Room
2 last week. She taught some
first-aid. She showed how to put
splints on in case of fractures and
how to apply a sling. •
GIRLS TEAMS
The girls have been playing
several games. They travelled to
Ripley and tied* 3 - 3. Our girls
were defeated 4 - 3' when they
played in Lucknow . They played
the Tykes and won. They play
Belgrave this week. The Panthers
have 8 points and the Tiger Cats

held a Public Speaking Contest
for Grades 5 - 8.: Grade winners
and their topics were Grade
Janice Robinson, (Mother Goose);
Grade 6, Lori Anne Jamieson,
(Wheat); Grade .7 , Lynn Elphick,
(Princess Ann); Grade 8 , Ruth
Alton; (Hoover Dam). Going on
to further contests will be Lori
Anne Jamieson and lori Flackett
in Grade 5 - 6 to Lucknow Legion;
Lydri Elphick and Ken Metzger
will go to Lucknow in the Grade
7 and 8 division. Ruth Alton will
go to Bruise's in, the Trustee 's
Council Competition. Judges
were Duncan McKay' and Mrs,
Sally Wright'.
