Since the beginning 6f this new
year of 1974 Ripley has, a brand
new business. George McDonald ,
his wife Erma and his brother
Murray have turned ,their hobby of
collecting antiques into a business
offering many fine collectable
items to the public.

Christmas they have equipped
their modern and spacious garage
with display facilities for these -
antiques. The garage is located
at their home in Ripley and any-
one wishing to do so can view
these antiques. The McDonald
home is located just a few yards
south of the former railway sta-
tion.

With the end of January at
hand and the welcome lengthening
Of the hours Of daylight and per-
haps also because a moderate
January thaw took place last week,
there has been several reports of
the sightings of different birds.
The first crow for Ripley was
sighted last Wednesday by Mrs.
Gladys Huston as it perched in a
poplar tree at the back of Char-
les Hooisma's AbbatOir. In the
bright sunshine last Friday morn-
ing three crows were sighted
along Highway 9 to Kincardine.
The first one was at the Horn farm
and then a pair flying in the.
Cedars neat the bridge on the
Penetangore River in Kirica.rdine.
On Tuesday .of last week a magni-
ficent large white Snowy Owl ,
down from the Arctic ; was sighted
on the tallest tree in Gore Park by
Mrs. George McLean. Joy 'watch-
ed the bird perched on the top of
the tree fOr some tittle. Later, it
was- sighted by Mrs. Murdock Mac-
Donald as she visited with Mrs.
Gladys Huston: This time it was
in a tree at the, rear of the horrie
of Mrs.:John A. McDonald in the
south part of Ripley. Stewart
Needham and Ross Willits spotted
a bird at the Ripley PoSt Office "
which Stewart identified as a
Mourning dove. On Friday after7
noon a sparrow hawk was noted
flying around Ted Rouse's Chop-
ling Mill, no doubt picking out a
fat bird for a meal.

On . Wednesday and Thursday of
last week,a .survey crew. was busy
at-the Tain intersection of Ripley.
The young men in their bright
red stocking caps added a touch of
colour to the winter' scene.

Last Thursday morning the
people of the Ripley-Huron district
were startled by the news of the
sudden passing of Bill Wilkin due
to "a heart attack. The funeral
,was held on 'Saturday afternoon at
the Ross MacLennan Funeral
Home in Kincardine. Bill, 64
years of age , farmed for a number
of years on the fourth concession
west in Huron and then resided
in the picturesque village of Lurg-
gan down the hill at the "foot" of
the .fourth. • Sympathy is expressed
to his wife , the former Edna
Ernmerton, to his daughters Barb-
ara , Mrs. Gordon Dickinson, Kin-
cardine and Joyce , Mrs. Jim Mac -
Ivor of Goderich and to his sons
Carl and Eric of Kincardine and
Murray of •Huron.

suffered an unfortunate accident
at a regular meeting of the Ripley
Scouts in the Ripley-Huron Leg-
ion Hall last Thnrsday.evening.
During the recreation period he•
suffered a sprained ankle which
later that night necessitated a trip
to Kincardine Hospital where Dr.'
Clare bandaged it. Donnie ex-
pects to be able to return to his
job at the Point this week. .

Robert Simpson Jr. and Dennis'
Quinlan returned frOm
with stories of lionolula , Disney-
land and many places of interest.
They reported a pleasant 80 deg-
ree temperature during their stay
and a' very interesting trip..
Miss Margaret Simpson was
home for the, week end frOm
Kitchener Nursing school with her
parents. •
Miss Diane MacKenzie was in
Toronto last week end. ,
Mr. and Mrs: Duncan Simpson
and David visited on Saturday
evening with Mr. and Mrs. War-
ren Zinn and Paul. •
Boys from the area travelled to
Brussels Sunday for a Pee Wee'
hockey play-off game. Steven
Simpson reports a', win and a loss
with Brusiels so far with games as
exciting as ever.
Kenneth Farrish of Stratford
visited on the week end with his
parents Mr. and Mrs. Duncan
Farrish.
Mi. Richard Sands of Knox
College , Toronto was in Ashfield
Presbyterian Church again on
Sunday for the 1.30 plm. service.
He reminded us that church starts
at eleven a.m. next week, being
the first Sunday of February and
that he will be making a return
visit on that day February 3rd. .
The following Sunday the Rev-
erend Robert Currie of Wallace-
burg will come to ,Ashfield Presby-
terian Church to preach for a
call. We would ask as many as
poisible to be present for the im-
portant task of selecting our .new •
minister February .10th.
The weather has been very mild
and the community' quiet this
week. 'The hum of snowmobiles -
has even ceased with the scarcity
of snow and the saving of petrcil.

the Guide prayer.

evening. The girls played sever-
al games while refreshments were
served to the guests. We were
'honoured with the presence of
our Madame Commissioner., Mrs. ,
Carroll McKim.
Campfire was led by Susan •
Thompson. The meeting was
closed with vespers and taps.
