EDNESDAY, JANUARY 16 1974
The people of the` Ripley-Huron
area were sorry to learn that Bert
Breckenridge had the misfortune
to suffer a fractured hip early last
week. At the time Bert was a pat-
ient in Kincardine and District
Hospital and was taken by am-
bulance to St. Joseph's Hospital
in London. His wife Ivlapel was
already a patient in St. Joes and
at this time of writing she contin-
ues in the Intensive Care Unit
there. Bert is on the fourth floor
where also are' Mrs. Patterson,
'Mrs. Munn and'Mrs. Osborne; all
of this, area . Able to be
back home to Ripley from St.
Joe's are Lloyd Wylds and Jeff
Rouse who were hospitalized
there for several weeks.

• Early Wednesday afternoon the °
Ripley fire siren, located on the
new Huron township municipal,,.,
building in the north east corner
of Ripley, sounded loud and clear.
The location of the fire was at
Lurgan - down the hill 'at the
"foot" of the fourth concession,
near the mouth of Pine River and
Lake Huron. 'A workshop - stor-
age shed owned by Charles J. Hill
of 2 Saint Arnauld Street in the
Alma townsite was being warmed
with a stove and it is thought pos-
sibly over heated pipes were the
cause. Fortunately when it was
detected Mr. Hill left .the building
closed up so that, no fresh air
would enter and immediately sum-
moned help. Further , the Ripley
Fire truck t.driven by Bob Johnston,
accompanied by Ivan
Cook, was met at Pine River and
guided to the scene: at 2
Arnauld St. fire Chief. Doug
Liddle.gives credit to' these two
things in 'helping the firemen save.
the building and possibly other
nearby cottages. It is understood
that the cottage of 'former Ripley-
ite Roy Wilson, is near this place.
Ffteman Jack Scott drove the
new tanker truck down while fire-
men Clarence Pollock and George
Mcliean, along, with Doug Liddle
and Oraen Rock, drove down in'
their cars. The seven members of
the Ripley•Fire Department got •
quickly to work. They removed a
roof ventilator and were able .to
gel the water hose into the build-
ing from the roof without still
opening the door. They also cut
a hole in the foot thick ice of the
Pine River' in case additional
water beside that contained ,in
both the fire truck and fire tanker
truck would be needed'. However
it was not needed. Chief Doug
Liddle and his men were most
thankfUl to be met on the road
and guided to the location. They
would appreciate if this could be
repeated on future calls to the
Point Clark area.
