Snow-covered scenes and glistening tree tops make dreams of Christmas wonderment a living joy to young ands old Finley McInnes , a native of this community, was recently honoured in Inuvik, North West Territories, when the Royal Can adian. Legion Branch in that north- ern community officially changed its name to the "Mclnnes Branch 2207. 'Finley, or Mac as he is known to many of his friends, was born in this community. He is the son' of the late Neil McInnes of the 2nd of Kinloss and Annie .Beaton of the 4th of Huron. A long time resident of Inuyik, Mr. McInnes has always held a keen interest in the north. In changing the name Legion mein- bets in that town decided, to name the branch after a local man, a Canadian, a man well respected by all who knew him. For 50 years or more Mr. McInnes gave his best for the early development of the north. The McInnes branch is the most northerly branch of the Legion. In the dedication of the new building, the Legion had this to say about Finley. "We honour McInnes , not be- cause he is famous, a hero., nor indeed even well known, but be- cause this. the, Most Northerly Branch of the Royal C,anadian Legion will be named after a Can- adian, a local man, a man living in this town; a Northern man;.a life member of this Branch; .a man who so well typifies the cour- age , the determination, the • spirit of the many pioneers of this great Northland." ' Finley and. Marie McInnes are well known to many Lucknow res- idents. A -few years ago, they resided for a short time 'in the Mc- Innes home on Havelock:Street in Lucknow. Finley is a brother ?f Ge6rge McInnes of Lucknow Dean McIn7 • nes of Toronto and. Neil McInnes of Barrie. ,1 Following is a brief history of the life of Finley Mcbmes as recorded by the Unuvik Legion branch at the time of the dedica- tion of the new branch on Novem-: ber Ilth. Mr. McInnes was born in Lucknow , Ontario, September 19, 1893. His parents were from. Kin- loss Township. He worked for and earned a first class engineer's ticket in the flour and wood mills in Lucknow. In 1916 he saw service with the 79th and 43rd Battalions C.O. M. F. , and during this time he volunteered for duty in' the air • - forae•• His record, listed 'him as 'an engineer and he was therefore sent to the Imperial Division Tun- neling, the attraction there being . "all the rum you could drink". During his time at Ypres. by, his own recollections, there was sand, and the trenches didn't have enough room to turn a rifle. Once when using a listening device , he heard the' enemy who also-heard. him , they met and fought •, then fortunately found out they were both of the same outfit. - It was during this time that he tried rum for the first time, no comment on the results. During a gunnery barrage, he heard an .incoming shell, dived for cover, sand "discovered" the first pritnus stove.
