THE LUCKNOW SENTINEL, LUCKNOW, ONTARIO
THE STORY. GOES LIKE THIS in. Scotland, they
recently tore down an old factory building and came up with
a yellowed set of Office rules dated 1852. As a modern code'
of conduct, it would cause immediate mutiny, but I thought
you might be interested in reading just a few of the codes:
.1. This firm has reduced the hours 'of work and the cleri-
cal staff will now 'only have to be present between the
hours of 7 a.m, and 6' p.m.
2. Daily prayers will be held each morning in the main
office. The clerical staff will 'be present.
, 3. Clothing must be of a sober nature. The clerical staff
will not disport themselves in raiment of bright colors. 4. A stove is-provided for the benefit of the clerical staff.
Coal and wood must be kept in the locker.„It is recom-
mended that each member of the clerical staff bring
four. pounds of coal each day during- cold weather. 5. No member of the clerical staff may leave the room
without permiSsion of Mr. Rogers. The calls of nature
are permitted and the clerical staff may use the garden
below the second gate. This area must be kept in good
order.
6. No talking is allowed during the business hours.
7. The craving of tobacco, wines or spirits is a human
weakness and as such is forbidden to all members of
the clerical staff.
8. Now that the hours of business have been drastically
reduced, the partaking of food is allowed between
11:30 a.m. and noon, but work will not 'on any account
cease.
9. Members of the clerical staff' will provide their 'own
pens.
10. The owners, recogniie the generosity of the new
,Labour Laws, but will expect great rise in the output
of 'work to compensate 'for these near Utopian' condi-
tions.
Unbelievable the changes that a century will make.

THERE IS A BETTER THING than the observance of Christmas Day — lid
that is, keeping Christmas.
Are'you' willing, to forget what yOu have done for other people, and to remember
what mho' people have done for you?
Are you willing to stoop down and consider the Reeds and desires. of little
children; to remember the weakness and loneliness of people who are grulring old; tot
atop asking how much rout friends loie yOu, and ask yOurielf whether you love them
enough; to try to understand, what those who live in the same house irith you really
want, without waiting for them to tell you; to trim your lamp so that it will give more
light and' less smoke, and to carry it in front so that your shadow will ,fall behind you;
to make a grave for your ugly thoughts and a garden:for your kindly feelings, with
the gate open are you willing to do these things even fora day? Then you can
Ina Christmas.
Are you willing to believe that love is the strongest thing in the world'—
stronger than hate. stronger than evil, 'stronger:than death -,- and that the blessed life
which began in BethleheM over nineteen hundred years ago is the image and brightness
of the eternal love? Then you can keep Christmas. And if you can keep it for a day
*hi not abvayi? But you can never keep it alone. — HENRY VAN DYKE.
