A FEW NIBBLES
By, the Country Mouse
Some years ago, I had a friend
who was an omnivorous reader.
Every conversation with her was
sure to include some reference to
the books she had been enjoying.
You will be thinking the same
can be said of me.
I wonder how many of you saw
the movie "The Incredible Journ-
ey" or read the book by Sheila.
Burnford. 1 did neither , .but I
have read two of her books in re-
cent weeks. One was "One Wom-
an's Arctic" which told of her
experiences living among the
Eskimo at Pond Inlet on Baffin
Island. I found the book interest-
ing and very informative. We
are becoming more and more
aware of those hardy dwellers. in
Canada's far northland, the Eskimo
or Innuit, The" People. You just
might enjoy the book as I did.
Last night , I read her latest
book, "Mrs Noah and the Second
Flood" • To quote the dust jacket-
"This witty fable, hilariously fun-
ny as well as satisfyingly sad is
one which can truthfully be said
to appeal toyeaders of all ages".
"The book is dedicated 'to that
Ark of today , The World Wild-
life Fund and to all those true
descendants of Noah who work in
every way to keep it afloat, its
passenger list undiminished". -
From that little quote , ybu will
gather that it is concerned with
the preservation ,of wild life on .
this old earth. In building his
ark, Mr. Noah' followed the plans
that his great-great-many-times-
great-grandfather had drawn up.
He sent his three sons all over
the world to summon the animals
to come to his mountain. As he
built , the waters rose just as in•
the Bible account. As they rose,
they brought huge accumulations
of litter,.garbage and throw-away
junk, with plastic topping the
list and the flood. I shall not
tell you the surpirse ending, but
the whole book 'is warning of what
may happen if present trends con-
tinue , and it places the blame
exactly where it belongs.
Sheila Burnford was born.in
Scotland, but has 'lived in Port
Arthur. She now spends part of
the year in. Canada and part in
Britain. The book is published
by. McClelland and Stewart and
they tell me there is an edition
coming put in United States short=
ly.
