Many people ask me these days,
when, there is going to be an el-
ection? I can certainly be truth-
ful about that one when I answer
that I don't know . Actually . that
decision remains in the hands of
one man, David Lewis. Minority
governments as he says, may be
good for the people; I can only
add that they are very expensive.
On the other hand ..it is quite prob
able that in the future . minority
governments will be very common
For this reason, I believe that
Canada should copy the example
of tb,e United States and have
federal elections on a certain
date , every four years. Only by
doing thivcan we save future gov-
ernments from being' blackmailed

it is time to let someone else take
over. Someone. perhaps younger
and certainly with fresher views.
Certainly my views ate--n' orfresh
in this modem world. because l
still happen to believe that -no-
one including governments should-
spend more than they take in.
Hirthermore. I believe that even
such great social legislation as
we have in Canada, such as fami-
ly Allowances, Old Age Pensions
and medical insurance should be
based on what the canary can
afford, and not on political ex-
pediency. In the long „run , we as
citizens should only hive, what
we as taxpayers can afford to pay.
To change the subject for a
Moment, I must tell you that
the Governinent is not bluffing
and there is a very good chance,
that we are going to have an
energy crisis for the nextcouple
of years. By the end of 19115, a
pipeline will have been built into
the Montreal area , which will'
allow western oil to look after the
needs of the eastern provinces.
When this is done , it will be just
one more occasion for
each and everyone of us to show
appreciation in being fortun-
ate'-e.nough to live in this great '
country; because Canada will be
one of the few nations in the
world, that will have enough oil
without being dependent on some-
one else. Many critics Can blame.
the Government for not having
built a pipeline years ago, but
the fact is, it would have been
completely uneconomical to do so
and as foresight has never been
proven to be as good as hindsight,
it simply did not know that the
Arabs were going to pull the plug
into doing, things that are not nec-
essarily good for the country as a
whole.
My mail is still reasonably
heavy and I am happy to say that
many people writelo me with
their problems. In every instance,
we try to help although not al-
ways successfully. 'Certainly, it
is my intention to keep doing my
job to the best of my ability, un-
til the next election comes a -
long , whenever that may be.
With this as a Background , ;
urge any of you who may have
any problems whatsoever, where
you feel I might be of some help;
to write to me in Ottawa.
In conclusion, I want to thank
the 'so very many'people who
have been so kind to me for so
many years. In any political
Party , an Executive is needed
and mine has been superb. In
any election campaign, workers
were needed and mine indeed
have worked by the hundreds.
Finally , however, in order to get
into politics , one must represent
a Riding , and I am' so
my fate allowed me to
