SIMPLE, TRAP MEASURES
STORED GRAIN INSECTS
A simple trap for insect detect-
ion in stored grains has been de-
veloped at the Canada Depart-
ment' of Agriculture Research
Station', Winnipeg, Manitoba. The
trap is basically a length of pipe,
plugged at the bootom, with holes
on the side through which the
insects can crawl.
If you want to make the trap,
use 'one-half inch pipe and put a
cork or some other type of plug
in the bottom. If the plug is
pointed it will be much easier to
shove into the pile of grain. Start-
ing near the bottom end, drill a
number of small holes along the
length of the pipe. A Mi inch
hole should be large enough to
let ,the insects enter but not the
grain.
If there are insects in the
grain, some will crawl through
the hole, and fall to the. bottom
of the pipe where they will col-
lect. You should use a minimum
of one trap per thousand bushels
and check. once a week. 'In the
winter place the traps in the
centre of the bin where it is
warmest, and in any areas where
rain or snow has dampened the
grain. When the 'weather begins
to warm 'in the spring, the traps
should be moved near the walls,,
especially the south or warmest.
wall. '
If you find insects in the trap,
then bring them to this office for
identification. If they can damage ,
the grain, then fumigation may be
necessary.
The trap can also be used for
taking grain temperature, by in-
serting a thermomet0 on a string
into the pipe.
