AND VIEWS

Canadian people - both consum-
ers and producers, are ,really puz-
zled.
On the one hand, food prices
are rising constantly yet
spokesmen for farm organizations
say farmers are still 'having a diffi-
cult time. What is wrong?
Between 1961 and 1971 farms,
in• Canada , declined from 481,000
to 365 ,000 - about 20%. 'How-
ever , farm investment increased
from $13 billion to $23 billion -
almost 80%; farm debt increased
from $1:. 8 billion to $4.7 billion ,
or 160%. Many farmers were
forced into bankruptcy. Others
have expanded their operations
to combat a similar 'fate.. But
when farmers expand , they must
replace labour with additional
capital inputs, so agri-business is
booming.
Farmers today appear to be
prosperous. They have large
farms and handle a great amount
of money. However , they are
deeply in debt and are , in fact ,
captives of the agri-business
sector of the economy.
