The Lucknow Sentinel, 1973-10-24, Page 2Elementary school children should not have to walk on the road to get to school in Lucknow. The whole 4-block stretch of Willoughby Street , from Ross Street to the school, a major access route for children from the south side of town, has 1 1/2 blocks of sidewalk in the 4-block stretch. We repeat our earlier expressed opinion, The No. 1 sidewalk priority in Lucknow exists on Bob, and Willoughby Streets. cr FABRICS LIMITED Custom Draperies and Drapery Hardware 4 , Dominion, and Armstrong Cushionflor and Inlaid Vinyls AND , The LUCKNOW SENTINEL LUCKNOW, ONTARIO "The Sepoy Town" — On the Huron.Bruco Boundary SeCond Class. The Sentinel favours this re- placement program, but only after various other parts of the village , without sidewalks since the village was founded , are prov- ided with the normally expected walkways. Some years ago, in these col- umns , the Sentinel suggested that a sidewalk program to the Lucknow School was a priority item. We have not changed our ideas on this. The Lucknow District High School was built in 1953 , twenty years ago, and as yet there is no sidewalk access to the school on either Bob Street or Willoughby Street. Several years ago the school became an elementary • school with children from 5 years of age'and up attending. The • need at this time 'became even more acute. NAME STEALING The town of Durham is present- ly in a confrontation with the Ont- ario 'Government over the recent- ly newly named, regional munic- ipality of Durham named by public ballot in the recent elec- tion for the new regional govern- ment area surrounding Oshawa'. The town of Durham , in Grey • County , feel that a second muni- cipality in Ontario with, the same name, will only create confusion and problems. for the residents of both, and already this has started to, happen. Phone calls intended for the 'new. area are arriving at Durham and one can imagine. what, will happen to the mail destined to the two municipalities. We find it hard to understand . how the provincial government could let the new municipality vote on the' choice of several names, knowing full well that the most popular choice, Durham, could only lead to problems. We find it hard to understand how the residents of Durham ,.in Grey County , could sit idly by until the damage was done. NoW they are blaming their member of the provincial' parliament, the gov- erntnent , and just about everyone except themselves. Surely they were aware that the new municip- ality was being formed and that one of the suggested names was Durham. Anyone who had read a Toronto paper over the past few months would have gained that information very easily. It would have been much easier for Durham to head off this prob- lem before it was created. Now with the .barn door open and the horse', out , they are making a determined effort to correct a situation which should never have I should like a small space in your paper to express my views as a tax payer on the beach at Point Clars Clark. A we only use our cottages two months of the year and our taxes are getting out, of all prop- portion; we are naturally worried about further expenditures. • Just recently. we Were 'called upon by Huron Township Council to finance a drain through swampy land , each lot to pay . over two hundred dollars. This land does need a drain,, but it should have been drained by • township years ago, before they let the back cottages build on it. ' On top 'of this we now learn our same Council has approved financing up to $100 ,000 for a Recreation Complex in the village of Ripley; estimated total. cost $450,000. This will 'likely also mean operation and , maintenance of same throughout the following years. We feel we' are now living in. a dictat- or state. This means 3 mills on the tax rate and an increase on your property tax for the capital expenditure 'I understand from• good author-, ity tere, are three auditoriums in Ripley , which are not being put to full use. Small com- munities should be given more consideration by the government in many ways,. but name stealing seems to •he a new twist in a dep-• lorable situation. * * • * More Donations To Recreation Complex Further donations to October 22 to the Ripley-Huron Recreation Complex are as follows: Perrin .Lowry 250 , Aurel Arm- strong 200 ,Harold Courtney 100; Ken Farrell, Glen Huston, Murray Wilken 50; Bob Rutledge , Wally Pollock 500; Pete Cameron, Cedil Hollands, Oliver Smith, John Gamble 100; Bas Van der Hoek, 50 , Allistet MacKay 100, Keith Van der Hoek 50 , Russell -Stanley 250; Hugh Mason, Walter Roul- ston 20; Wilf Janisse, Art Smelt - zer , Garry Courtney ,, Art' Hough- ton 25 , Stewart Farrell 500, Dort Gillies 50 , Kitt Elmes 10.
