30 YEARS AGO.
AUGUST 1943,
- The sale of right-of-way of the
'ill-conceived and ill-fated Ont-
ario West Shore Railway, which
skitted the. Blue. Water Highway
from Goderich to Kincardine, to
the Ontario Department of•High-
ways,was approved. It comprised
about fifty-five acres and the
agreed, price was $100. an acre.
Four municipalities were • affect-
ed, Gpderich, Kincardine, `Ash-
' field and Huron Townships. It
was estimated that it cost the
ratepayers of the four municipal-
, ities well over three-quarters-of
a million dollars in .principal
and interest.
The new ration book No. 3
was being distributed locally with
a staff of volunteer workers under-
taking the task..
A 500 pound black beat, meas-
uring seven feet in length, was '
shot near Park Head in Bruce
County. The bear had caused
considerable damage in bee yards ,
in .'that area before being tracked
down.
Frank Alton of Ashfield had
commenced construction of a
large poultry house with capacity
for over 3000 -laying hens. The
building was.scheduled for. corn- •
pletion by about December 1st.

of Kinloss Township recently
held a very successful auction
,sale at their farm on the eth 'con-
cession and have moved to
haM where they are residing in au
apartment at 285 Minnie Street..
Allister and Jean 'reeently, sold,.
their 100 ,acrt farm to pavid Mac-,
Kinnon of Kinloss, son.of Mr. and .
Mrs. Fraser .MacKinnon,. The
Hughes still own a second 100
acres., from the 4th of Kiriloss •
north. on the. east side of the
Lucknow-Holyrood road , the form-
er Peter MacDougall place. There
are no buildings on it.
The Hughes` farm was originally
taken. up .by Murdock MacKenzie.
Allister's grandfather Richard
Hughes acquired. theproperty and
his father Ben,, later farmed
there,. Allister was born on the
farm. and lost his mother at the •
.age of 4. years , she being the
fdrmer Janie MacDonald. He
and. his father' continued to live .on
the 'farm. •
51 years ago Allister married'
Jean Webb of. West,. WaWanoill
and the couple spent all their mar-,
ried life on the same farm'. •
Roy. M. Cringles
Wed 50 Years
Mr. and Mrs. Roy M. Cringle,
1421 O'Connor , Lincoln Park,
Michigan, celebrated th.eir. 50th
wedding anniversary July 2& at ,a
reception.in the Trenton Masonic
Temple.
Hosts at the event were the
couple's daughter - Mrs. John
(Helen) Cockwell, of Trenton,
Michigan, and her husband.. The
honoured couple have two grand -
'sons, Roy Cockwell, who attends •
Central Michigan. University, and
John Cockwell, a student a't Tren-
ton High School..
Decotations.at the•party includ-
ed a double-ring cake, gold can-
delabra , yellow floral centerpiec-
es , a large yellow bell and a.
50th anniversary banner; Shay-,
five relatives, friends and neigh-
bours were served a buffet dinner.
Mrs. Cringle wore a pale green
and white dress complemented by
a corsage of yellow rosebuds.
Mr. Cringle is a native of
Mount, Forest, Ontario. His wife,.
the former Margaret dillies,
daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
David Gillies was born in West
Wawanosh township, 4 miles
east of Lucknow , Ontario.
Mr. and Mrs. Cringle, who
were wed July 31, 1923 at St.
.James Presbyterian Church in tor-
'onto, went to the United States
in 1925. They have spent Most
of their married life in Lincoln
Park.
Mr. Cringle was retired in 1961
from the 'Ford Motor Company's
shipping and receiving department
after 36 years' service. Mrs.
Cringle also was employed at
Ford's, during the second world
war.
The couple have travelled to
Hawaii and throughout the contin7
ental United States and Canada.
Mr. and Mrs. Cringle attend
the Allen Park United Presbyter-
ian Church.

The new owners are Mr. and
Mrs. ROss Cayley 'of the 8th of
Kinloss who have been living on
the former Lloyd Moffat farm for
the past two years.
Mr. and Mrs.. Cayley have sold
their Kinloss property to David
and Sandra Bridle of Guelph.'
Mr*. Cayley, a Toronto native ,
is employed by Ontario Hydro at
the Bruce Generating Station.
Mrs. Cayley is the former
Edyth Quinn of Kincairdine Town-
-ship. They have a family of
three, Robert 5 , Gloria 4 and
Roddy 2.
Lucluidw suffered •its worst fire
in years when the Hay Bros. elev
ator containing a quantity of
flaxseed, a warehouse filled with
pressedhay belonging to R. T
and

Irwin, a pile of hardwood
lumber belonging to John Joynt
were' completely destroyed by*a /
fire which got underway about
eleven o'clock at night. The
fire was thought to have started by
sparks from the C.N.R. train,
Local markets were advertising
egg prices 15 - 23 - 260; butter
25, - 320; hogs $9.00.

Meet At Ripley
The 'Directors of Ripley Happy
Hearts Club met at the home of
Mrs. Roy MacKenzie 'to plan for
the coming season for the 'Senior
Citizens of Ripley and area.
An Exchange trip to'Halifax has
been cancelled for this Fall but
may become a reality next May
of June.
Ttie bus trip in. July to, Kincar-
dine arid Port. Elgin had been most
enjoyable. A. trip to Midhurst
and Midland will take place on
August 28th.
The display on Arthritis at a
Sale on August 11th had been well
received and plans for a
