Harold spent 'Thursday driving from his home in Appleton, Wisconsin - near Green Bay and drove home via Detroit 'and 'Chicago on Satur- day. While here, he droVe up to his. native Ripley on Friday morn- ing when he called on the writer and in a motor trip around the village met with Murdock,McDon- ald, Dave Henderson, George McDonald, Ken MacLennan of Toronto, Mrs. Ross Martyn and village clerk Bill McCreath. The Ripley Huron and District Recreatibn Complex held a meet- ing of the finance committee on Tuesday evening of last week in the Huron Township hall after the Conclusion of a boy's softball game in the park at the rear. In attendance were Bob Emerson, Allan Irwin, Ab Wylds, Kenny MacDonald, Elmer Courtney, Carrnon Courtney and John Loom- is, Chairman was Bob Emerson who gave the progress report to late. Allan Irwin gave the fin- ancial report on 'the Saturday evening Family Fun Night,which added over four hundred dollars to the funds. Bob read two let- ters from Jack Pierson, the con- sultant from Peterborough. Ball games were planned for the dates of September 2.and 28 with John Loomis and Elmer Courtney in charge, of arrangements. The out- door setting was ideal as the weather was warm and sunny with a1light breeze - just ideal. In the crowd were many folk from the different cities intermingled with local people.. People were there from such widely separated places as California, Mr. and Mrs. Srhith Robertson of Los Angeles; Florida, Vancouver and Halifax. Cities such as Toronto, Kitchener, London and Detroit were represented. Staff members. from froth at least two American Univ- ersities registered, namely the University of. Ohio at Columbus, Ohio and the University of Michi- gan at Ann Arbour, Miehigan. The' ankles to be sold were moved to the park on Friday after- noon and early' Saturday morning. 'Helping were Pat Courtney with his pick up truck. Pat is the son 'of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Conrtney, concession '2. Also helping Mr. ' and Mrs. George. McDonald and Murray McDonald were Bert Irwin and Ab Wylds. In charge of the sale were 'auctioneers Grant Mc- Donald and Wallace Ballagh, clerk Donald Courtney, cashiers Peter Barber of Toronto and Brian MacDonald home frOm North •Bay and registration clerk Ab Wylds. A group of ladies from St. Andrews staffed the refreshment booth at the rear 'of the hall. 'The sale went well and it also finished in good time - before six in evening having started at ten in the morn- ing. Several including William Arnold, Mrs. Stewart Shiells, Mrs. McDonald, hall caretaker Ham MacKinnon and several other's co-operated in a cleaning of. the grounds before leaving at the end. Mr. and' Mrs.. George McDonald have announced the• sale of their cottage at Lurgan and this will result in 'a sale of furn- ishings there. • • 0 * * The funeral of Mrs. Thomas Donnelly was held on Fridayafter- noon in Goderich with interment in Maitland Cemetery. Mrs. Don- nelly, the former Grace Venner, pissed away earlier in the week. she was in her 69th year. Before her marriage, Grace Venner of Clinton served two years, 1937 to 1939, on the staff of the Ripley Continuation School - now the District High School. She . succeeded Mrs. John Willocks, :hen Miss Margaret Armstrong, now in Toronto and was followed by Miss Dorothy Burgess in 1939. Miss Burgess and Mrs. Willocks are both members of the Toronto Collegiate's staffs. Whenever the Ripley ladies softball team The Flyers - played in Goderich, Mr. and Mrs. Donnelly always welcom e Mr.' and Mrs. John Colwell of Kenora visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Forster and fam• ily relatives in this area. * * • * JUDGING AT OTTAWA Starting on Monday morning of this week, Mrs. Marion McCharles of Lochafsh has been judging exhibits in the ladies department at the Central Canada Exhibition in Ottawa. She is, accompanied .' by her -friend Mrs. Annie (Bert) Mason of Kincardine. On Sunday her 'husband Oliver drove them to Toronto Airport and from there they flew to Ottawa. Air travel was necessitated due to the current railway strike. This is the 80th annual exhibition at Ottawa and this year's dates are August 17 to 26. It 'is held in ' the large Civic Centre in Lands- downe Park, and was first incorpor- ated in 1888 by the Central Can- ada Exhibition Association. , • * * • • Next Tuesday, August 21, the . Ripley and District Horticultural Society, will.hold their 46th annual Flower Show in the Ripley Huron Legion Hall. In charge will be the 1973. directors, Mrs. Mar- ion McCharles convener Mrs. Bert Mason and Mts. Ben Ruttle of Kincardine , Mrs. Orville Fin- layson of Huron and Mrs. George -McDonald of Ripley. President is Mrs. Walter Farrell of Kincar- dine. A large number of exhib-/' its is expected since there is pres- ently a plentiful supply of flow- ers. • A tea , bake , and plant sale Will be held in connection with 4. At one iirne last Saturday after- noon there was a small reunion Of former Ripley High School students. Noted were. Mrs. Ruth Johnston of Mississauga - Ruth Hutton; Mrs. Joan Scheniman of Toronto - Joan Farrell; Mrs. Doug Farrell - Charlene Lohnes; Brian MacDonald of North Bay; Smith Robertson of Los Angeles; Susan McLay of Toronto andothers. Perhaps Ripley and HurOn should stage the 1952 reunion all over again One of these years.
