About History .
By The Country Mouse
When I was".at school, my most
'unfav,ourite. subject was history.
Now , a good part of my reading ,
is history written ilia readable
way, and as much as possible 'of
that is Canadian. This last week
or two, I have read three books
about Canada in the 1800's,
almost spanning the century. Two
,were published last year and the
other in 1956. The earliest was
Red fiver R4ver Adventure by W.
Chaers, a High School teicher
and inspector. It was written
primarily for,students and is_a
graphic, and factual but interest-
ins account of the Scottish sett-
lers sent to Canada by Lord Selk-
irk. It told many of the trials
and frustrations and hostility these
poor people suffered at, thehands
of the fur Companies and some of
the native people. The history
books omit most of the details.
The second book, The First,
Hundred by E. B. Jelliffe , span-
ned the years from 1846 tq 1862
with several references to the '
Rebellion of 1837. Manyof you
may remeniber Mr. Jolliffe as
a politician some years ago. His
book is a novel, set in the pion,
eer countryside probably near
Rockwood , although that town
is never named. All the problemS.
of the ajontario Pioneers are re-
counted as well as the building
of the Grand Trunk, schools and
churChes in the community.
There was the usual assortment of
people and the hard feelings
whicli so often resulted. The
book ends with a trial of several
men who were suspected of wip-
ing out the Doolans a story very
similar to the Black Donnelly
slaughter near London.
The third book, Recollections
of an Assiniboine Chief by Dan
Kennedy, is' just what it says,
reminiscences, stories and leg-
ends of the Assiniboine bands and
several other Western tribes. It
tells of the old Ghost fiance. Rel-
igion' and the Sundance, also the
bloody Massacre of many Indians
at Wounded Knee in the last
century. He tells of the disap-
pearance of the buffalo from the
plains which, forced the Indians
to surrender their independence
and old way of life•or else starve
to death.
,1 found all these books interest-
ing and a valuable addition to
our Canadian stay.
