out a wooden boat which was at
the shore, but it became tangled
in some, reeds.
A phone call for help was put
in to the Haldenby store at Kin-
lough. Bill Haldenby, An Hal-
denby, Steven Eckenswiller. and
Art Breckles went to the scene
to assist. Art Breckles loaded.;
his canoe on a pick up truck and
they were soon at the lake.
A call, put in to the Ripley
Fire Department,, was relayed to
Lucknow because the area is in
Kinloss, served by Lucknow.
The wooden boat was retrieved
by the use of the, canoe and Art
Breckles, along with fireman
.Gary Austin, pulled the two men
from the water. All during this •
time, the men had been hang-,
ing on the rubber raft which,
with their ' life jackets, kept
them afloat.
The men were none the worse
for their experience except
being a bit shaken and very wet.
The cottage on Hayes Lake, •
famous• for its muddy areas, is .
accessible by driving completely
around the lake on a narrow road
and it was fortunate that a phone
was'installed at the cottage or
'the length of time in .securing
help would have been increased
considerably. The mud in the
lake, .despite rumours which •
have been circulating, played
no part in the incident.
