Large Crowd At Ripley Information
Meeting To Discuss Proposal Of Building
'Swimming Pool With Arena - Complex
BY AB WYLDS
In the time space of less than
two weeks, two special informa-
tion meetings for the people of `
Ripley -Huron and surrounding .
area have been held in the audi-
torium of the Ripley District High
School. On Tuesday evening,
May 22, the topic under discus-
./ was, a medical centre for the
district. 'Last Saturday evening,
thine 2, the topic discussed was
a new recreation complex build-
ing
uild-ing to consist of an arena , audi-
torium, and indoor Swimming
pool. This would replace ,the
present Diamond Jubilee arena
at the north end of the village.
These meetings had similarit-
ies and differences as it would be
expected. In both cases they
were 'called for 8.15 but the
crowd did not gather till around
nine o'clock. In both cases Riple
District High School girls played
selections at the piano in this
time space. Last Saturday even-
ing it was Miss Joan Ferguson,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lester •
Ferguson, while at the first
meeting the pianist was
Miss. Margie MacKay, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Allister MacKay.
The size of the crowd in attend-
ance
ttend-ance was about the same. And
Well over half were the same citiz
ens of the area. Also: the two
meetings -were similar' in structure:
The main speaker at this second
meeting was the deputy reeve of
Huron. Township, Bob Emerson
of Purple Grove. In his calm and
considered manner Bob presented
an amazing: amount of informa-
tion,
nforma=tion, speaking straight ahea• with
out reference notes. After t nk-
ing Joan for playing he elco ed
those attending and pointed' out
that the nice day and evening had
delayed the start of the meeting.
He outlined briefly the steps lead-
ing to the meeting. :Bob stated
that when they were making re-
pairs last fall in preparation for
the hockey and skating season;
arena replacement was first men-
tioned., Serioustalk started in
January. The arena was built
in the fall of 1927 the first
metal rink in this part of Western
Ontario. -The year. 192.7 was the
60th year of Confederation and
the rink was this area's special
project. We remember Lucknow's
project was paving the.r;nain-
street -of the business
section. Bob said that they con-
cluded that it would be a major
expenditure to renovate the pres-
ent arena to make its facilities
comparable to the newer arenas
of the present day. Committees
were formed and some arenas were
visited. One which seemed to •
impress them was the new one at
Parkhill.
He stated that while the mem-
bers of parliament for 'the area
were unable to be at the meeting,
both Ross Whicher and Murray
Gaunt had called on Saturday
'assuring them of their support.
He stated that the three surround-
ing townships - Kincardine, Kin-
loss and Ashfield had favourably
received"their proposals. Grants
and operational costs were discus-
sed.
iscus-sed. The figure mentioned for
the whole complex was $450,000,
The new time clock presented by
the Ripley District Lions Club and .
the ice making plant, would be
used in the new building. He ,
mentioned that while the cost
might seem high, it is the same
as the estimated cost of rebuild-
ing
ebuild-ing the paved road known as the
15th from Highway 86 to Highway
9.
Bob introduced the two commit
tees which have been working
together on this project during
the winter - for Ripley Mrs.
Marg Rouse, Rod MacDonald,
Dave 'Henderson and chairman
:Kenny MacDonald, and for Hur-
on Township, Elmer Courtney.
Bert Elliott, John D. MacKay,
chairman Allan Irwin and of
course Bob himself. Considerable
information was given on the in-
door pool. The nearest one is in
Owen Sound and in talking to the
operators there they mentioned
people driving from the
Kincardine -and Goderich areasthi
past winter touse the pool there.
He drew attention to the fact that
ballots were distributed and boxes
were placed at the three exits•to
the gym for an opinion poll.
