block .was restored to its natural
colour by sand blasting. The
work was done by the, Waterloo
Company, which h'ad just com
pleted sand blasting operations
at the United Church.

MAY 1943
A local committee was formed
for the purpose of promoting a
°. farm commando brigade in the
/ Village to help "hoe, hay and
harvest" for victory., Rates of
pay were set at from 25 cents
to 40 cents an hour. 'Volunteers
to help on the farms were request-
ed to register their names and as
well, farmers who required • this
type of help were to leave their.
names with the committee.
George' McLean, reeve of Rip-
ley purchased the Commercial
Hotel building, which had been
vacant since the fall of 1939
when Floyd Strathdee moved to
Toronto. Mr. McLean planned
to remodel the building and rent
for store or office space.

They were assisted by the pastor
of the congregation Rev. Mr.
MacCallum.

Mackay; representing Ripley and
Huron Recreation Committee•and
Lions Club, appeared before
council requesting permission to
sell lottery tickets in the village
in support of the new recreation
complex to serve the Ripley -Hur-
on community. The two gentle-
men explained that it was neces- •
sary to obtain permission in sur-
rounding municipalities in secur-
ing a licence to operate a prov-
ince wide lottery. Reeve Joynt .
told them that he would check
with plans by. ;local service clubs
and would advise the committee
the following day.
Councilpassed a resolution
withdrawing the appeal to the
municipal board with respect to
the apportionment of the county
rates as the matter has been re-
solved.

to the Salvation Army Red Shield
Appeal.
Council approved a proposal
from a joint meeting, last summer
that the Recreation Chairman of

he was calling a special meeting
to deal with zoning in the village.
He .saidthat it might be several
years before planning is completed
in the south end of Bruce on a
county basis and that Lucknow was
in need of immediate zoning
decisions. Council examined the
map,of.the village and were to
have suggestions ready for the
specialmeeting this week.

In Car Accident
Four young men from this
areawere involved in a single car
accident on Highway 4, 2 1/2
miles north of Blyth on Thursday
night of last week.
Ken Johnstone of Lucknow ,
driving his late model Fiat,swery
edto avoid hitting a dog and
struck a 'soft shoulder which caus-
ed the'car to overturn in the
ditch. The carwas badly dam-
aged.
Ken was uninjured. Ken Roul
ston of Lucknow received a frac -
tured collarbone and was kept
under observation for several days
in Wingham Hospital for a pos-
sible spleen injury. Peter Chis-
holm of Lucknow was hospitalized
for observation but received only
minor injuries. A fourth man,
Bruce McManus of Wingham,
was also hospitalized overnight.
