HIGH„ WIND FANS FLAMES IN FREAK FIRE -
RetirrnfltHme At Paradise Lakes
DestroyedBy Fire, House and
Contents Levelled In 12 Minutes
Saturday. May 5 , a flash fire
completely destroyed' the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Walden of
London. The home is located at
Paradise Lakes, about 2.1/2 miles
east of Lucknow and is known to
older residents as the former Pur-
vis' Lake.
Mr. Walden has owned the prop
erty for about two years. The
home was nearly completed,
much of the work having been
done by himself with plans to use
the home as a retirement resid-
ence. He will retire as a
teacher in' London later this
month and planned to spend much
of his time at his property here.
Ray. lived at Ripley about 25 years
ago and taught at Ripley Public
School from 1943 td 1947; being
principal for the last three.years.
M. Walden was doing some
rose planting at the property the
day of the fire and decided to
patch the roof of the home where
a leak had developed: He was
I heating some patching tar in a
•container on the electric stove.
The door and windows of the
house were open and. a gust of
.wind blew a piece of newspaper
onto the stove and ignited the
tar.
In seconds, the home was 'a
mass of flames and Mr. Walden,
attempting to extinguish the
blaze, was lucky. to escape from
;the burning building with his
life. The one -storey house. with
three bedrooms, kitchen and
living room, was totally destroy -
,ed, along with all contents, in
12 minutes. The fire department
was not called because of the
speed in•:whi,eh,'the property .was.
destroyed. A high wind that day
fanned the flames.
The Walden car parked beside
the. house ;was removed in the
nick of ti/rne. The couple., plan"
to rebuild the home and, despite
the unfortunate interruption, the
retirement plans willbe ful-
filled.
ul-filled.
