Damages Front Of Albert Verheye
Building fn Ripley, Former Royal Hotel
THIS WEEK IN RIPLEY
.BY: AB. WYLDS
A car from; Kitchener partially
demolishedthe front entrance of
'Albert Verheye's apartment build-
ing at the. "main comer of Ripley
late Friday night. Apparently
the car had been cruising in the
village when it mounted the
curb and crashed the front and
north'sideof the glass and lumber
entrance lobby, smashing the
'front door, the window and
entire north side and reducing
these to splinters of wood and
glass. which covered the entire
main intersection. This made it
necessary for Mr. Verheye to ' .
sweep the streets -right across the
main corner to make the roads
safe for traffic: The crash also
smashed the wooden supports for
the stairs leading to the upstairs
apartments. As a result the out-
side stairway at. the front of the
building, which incidentally is the
former Royal Hotel, fell to the
sidewalk below. •
The crash, "which happened
sometime after midnight, awaken-
ed those in the •building and some
of the neighbours.. Two of the
men apprehended the car which..
had pulled away and .returned
to the scene. Ontario Provincial
Police from Kincardine were •
called to investigate. At this
time there is no evaluation 'of the
damage. '
Besides;the damage to; the en-
trance lobby, several glass and
other valuable antiques which
wereset up in the lobby were
destroyed . Sympathy of the
neighbourhood goes to Albert.
The verandah at the home of Mrs.
Ernie Pollock is 'not very many
feet, perhaps 25 to 30, north of
where the car crashed into the
former hotel building:

The weather of the past week
has not been kind to the farmers
of this whole area. Days of rain
and cold spells stopped the spring"
seeding. operations. Those. for-
tunate enough to have field sown
two weeks ago now have the
grain sprouted and their fields.
looking nice with straight green
rows quite visible. One such
field is a 50 acre one belonging
to Oliver Smith and one, block
south of Ripley along the

memory serves correct, the
school was full of students from
wall to wall with approximately
eight Students in the then Senior
Fourth class. getting ready for the
Entrance examinations which were
held in the Ripley Public School.
This was back in June, 1919.
Following Miss Scott as teachers
were Muss Margaret Cameron and
the late Cliff Huston for whom the
G. ,C. Huston School in Southamp-
ton is named. Like Miss Scott,
both had a full enrolment and the
entrance exams, which have now
passed into history. Mrs. Douglas
is a graduate of the Ripley Dist-
rict High School, then the Ripley
Continuation School.

writing, is a nice summer.
,morning following a clear, cold
and chilly day and ;night on Sat-
urday.. , Across the road in the
north end of Gore Park the honey
bees can be heard buzzing in the
blossoms of two large ornamental.
maples as they suck the nectar.
Remember this month of May last
year as the most piesant of the
whole summer.
