the Flowers of Hope 'program '
is k nation-wide attempt to focus
public attention on the increasing
progress and promise of Canada's
600,000 mentally retarded child-
ren'and adults.
Prior.to Mother's ,Day , which is
traditionally the beginning olthe
campaign,• thousands of mentally
retarded youngsters in residences,.
workshops, and training centres',
in villages, towns and cities
throughout the nation package
millions of marigold seeds for
.distribution to homes across Can-
ada. This has become a major
source for financing the operation
of workshops, nurseries and resid-
ences operated by Local Asscaia-
tions for the Retarded.
The •Canadian Association for
the Mentally. Retarded, and more
than 350 Local Associations, spon-
sor the campaign. -Although
mental retardation is the greatest
single chronic disability of our
children today, significant strides
are being made, into the preven.- .
. don and the amelioraticinofre-
taidation.
Today, more than ever, there
Is ample evidence that we have ,
grossly underestimated the poten-
tial of the mentally retarded.
There is not Only hope„but proof
that as our expectations of the
mentally retarded kise so will
their performance, growth and
independence - or, tragically,
vice versa..
Mori than 90 per• cent of all
retarded people are. educable or
trainable, and capable of a con-
siderable degree of self-sufficien-
'cy‘ if given a chance. The
Wingham and District Association
for the Mentally Retarded is •
appealing to all citizens to give
'them-that chance.
